External drive reviews...

In all of the posts and reviews I have read on CDR/RW hardware, the attention was focused on internal ATAPI drives.  Since I only use laptops, I was wondering if anyone had any opinions/reviews of external drives.

I notice Plextor has a few USB2 drives.  Does their good reputation based on their internal drives carry over to their external drives or is it a whole different ball of wax?

Maybe it would be better to buy a well known, highly rated, ATAPI drive and use a USB or FireWire enclosure to make it an external device.  Any thoughts?

Or maybe I should bite the bullet and go for the Sony DVD-R/DVD+R/DVD-RW/DVD+RW/CD-R/CD-RW drive.  Has anyone heard any audio ripping specific reviews on this or other DVD-R/RW external drives?
