best recording input?

So I purchased a Macbook Pro yesterday to replace my previous pc recording setup...
and I do not yet have a firewire preamp...

So my question is: Will I have better recording quality running my instruments and mics into my preamp/mixer, and then to:
1) the 1/8 inch mic input on my laptop
or
2) my Griffin iMic 24/96 usb soundcard

and if the answer is #2, should i set the iMic to "mic" or "line"?

????????

All comments appreciated!

You would set it to "line" input.  Be sure your soundcard's input can handle the soundboard's output.  Very few soundcards accept +4dBu, most use consumer level -10dBV.

As for where to plug it in... try them both and listen?

AFAIK (and I just checked the Griffen web site) there is no such thing as a Griffin iMic 24/96.

I'd use the line input of an iMic for the output of a regular audio mixer.

However, I'd be very wary, as historically the record side of iMics have been pretty terrible. The new imic appears to be a complete re-design from the one I tested some years back, so I don't know exactly what it is under the covers.
