LAME EOS

I thought I'd give Mr QuestionMan a go the other day, and after randomly clicking one of my album folders I noticed it was encoded in LAME EOS. A quick Google didn't return anything helpful, so I'm wondering -- just what exactly is this rogue verison of LAME?

EOS (Economy Of Sound) was / is an internal mp3 release group which specialized in EAC -aps rips ONLY 

they hacked the latest suggested lame.exe with their tag thats all

Almost certainly. I really doubt these guys have the know-how to change any other thing than the version string. They have troubles with morgothtools, let alone LAME itself... This is common in some release groups, though. There are at least 3 or 4 groups who change the original encoders.

I believe the version string is "LAME EOS" because they don't want other groups stealing their rips or otherwise taking credit for their rips. I'm not sure, I don't deal with "the scene".

It totally screws up oidua's LAME profile detection (since it looks for >3.90) yet strangely enough not the modified foo_input_std, but if it bothers you you can use a hex-editor to change " EOS" to "3.90". They are standard --aps rips, they don't do any tweaking to LAME itself.

But seriously, it is nice to know what version of the encoder is actually used.
Maybe if you remove the lame tag somehow, it can guess? Is there any tool that can do that?

Encspot is really neat, I've found encoders I've never heard of, like Shine, QDesign, Plugger, m3e, etc.... I had no idea there was even a 'Xing (Very Old)' encoder. Yecchh. Those go in the trash.

I am going to copy all my mp3's to one dir and then sort them by encoder, the results should be interesting.

KSi (Kludge Sound Inc.) , AFAIK , used to do it; not sure if they do anymore.

... but like emtee said, i heard it from a friend who heard it from his friend, and so on and so forth

EDIT- i just saw schonenberg's post above on KSi , but I was re-iterating (i suppose).
