Capturing streaming video from internet

Hallo everybody,
I am a newbie in video. I would like to put on my disc some records from squash matches available on-line in a compressed format on web pages. Windows or Real media recorder likely can do that, but maybe there is a freeware which, after keying URL address may do the same job. The result is likely asf format. Any tips on how
1. To capture the video in a file
2. To convert asf into avi or another format which allowes slowing speed down and more comfort and some easier manipulation on one of common players (WMP, BS player and so on).

Many thanks.

You might try 'Net Transport.'  About 5 or 6 months ago it went from freeware to shareware.  The freeware version is probably still available somewhere on the 'Net.  It suports rtsp and mms protocols, so both Real and Windows Media can be downloaded using it.

Netransport is excelent solution-for me its a best download manager together with flashget
It was free and without popups till version1.87.From then till now it had implemented few more features and it become shareware.
Last version is 1.93.....But limitation is really small, there is a random popup every ferw weeks here and there so i really recomend it for using

Dear colleagues,

thank you all for proposals and help. Netrasport works well, and occassional pop-ups do not bother me that much. Looking forward to talk to you soon.

Rgds,

though this isn't really important, it seems it's very difficult to get VLC to output a 100% compliant asf stream.  though it's worked on every computer i've tried it on, it didn't work on mine

tried it with that hilarious footage of anna-nicole at the american music awards... freaking genius.

Probably this is because it uses the ffmpeg muxer which is known to do this sort of thing.  See [a href="http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=6158004&forum_id=1506]http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.p...4&forum_id=1506[/url] it seems to be quite problematic ATM.
