Character limit for tags on iPods?

Howdy,

Does anyone know if there is a character limit on iPods for the various tag fields?

Thanks

Probably Otto42 would know.  But I know I have used foo_pod to transfer music with APE tags as long or almost as long as the track name Galley posted.  Check to make sure that it isn't the id3 tag which is limiting factor.  It is like 30 characters IIRC for id3v1.  If your id3 tag is the problem, I would use an APE tag and use foo_pod to sync to your iPod.

In theory, you could put 2,147,483,647 characters in a tag string, given the format in the iTunesDB file.

In cold hard practical reality, it'll likely break after a few hundred. I've not yet found a maximum size to things like track name and so forth, even with some really, really big track names.

The location field, which tells the iPod where the file is on the disk, is limited to 255 characters. This is mainly a Windows limitation, not necessarily an iPod one, but it does seem to be hardcoded into the iPod as well, probably to avoid compatibility problems, not to mention the slowness of the drive problems that can cause starving of the decoder if the path traversal takes too long.

Anyway, I suggest keeping tags under 200 or so, overall.

but this would still leave the question if Apple's iPod Database can store an unlimited amount of chars per song in it's database...
--alt-presets are there for a reason! These other switches DO NOT work better than it, trust me on this.
