what is syntax to add volume value on a status bar?

There is no title formatting. But assuming you're using default UI, just right click the status bar and enable the option.

Is there any way to show the volume in a place other than the status bar or the volume slider? I wish I could put it somewhere else in the interface.

Toolbar headers let you put the slider anywhere in default UI. It doesn't have to be at the top.

If that's no good, you'll have to enter the murky world of scripting components like Spider Monkey Panel, JScript Panel etc.
