MP3 vs AAC down-conversion

We stream in 64K DBR AAC+. We have done a blind test at a 256K AAC file down-converted to 64K, VS. the same song as a FLAC file down-converted to 64K AAC+. While the difference in the two 64K files is noticable, it was not dramatic. We are wondering if anyone has converted 256K MP3 files to 64K AAC+, and additionally if any comparisons have been done between the quality of these 64K conversions.

ie: Does MP3 or AAC down-convert better to 64K AAC+?
