Trying to use same foobar on many laptops via Dropbox

Hello! First post... Looked around for an answer to this and got fairly far, but need some help...

My goal is to sync my music, playlists and foobar on multiple windows 10 laptops, hopefully using dropbox. It would be great if no matter what laptop I'm on, the playlists / music / even the layout of foobar is the same.

So I've got a folder in dropbox called 'music', it contains all my music and a 'portable' installation of foobar. My thinking being I should be able to run that from any laptop and it should be the same.

I had some playlist problems because the 'user' folder was different on different machines. So I setup some hardlinks / symlinks, which seems to have solved this problem.

The issue now is dropbox is crapping out because it can't sync a file called 'running' which is in the main foobar installation folder. This has happened several times and it's for sure not running on another machine.

At the moment this issue seems to mean that the playlists don't want to update / stay in sync. Music folder access is fine. I've also had foobar crash a couple of times, which has never happened to me before, been using it for a while.

So... Any ideas if this is even possible? I'm starting to think that I'll have to install a local copy of foobar on each machine and then just save / load playlists often. Which is a shame.

Thankyouverymuch.

Is that "user" directory some Dropbox thing? Portable foobar2000 doesn't use per-user directories. And neither should any additional component.

The "running" file not syncing is not a problem for foobar2000 at least. It's just a helper to let the player know when it has crashed so it can suggest safe mode and troubleshooting hints.

Just wanted to say that my setup seems to be working sweet!

I thought I needed those hardlinks because when I looked at the details of a track it would say location "C:/Users/Username/Dropbox/File" and the 'username' is different on different laptops, but it works fine without the links.

I'm careful to let Dropbox get up to date before firing up foobar, which seems to help.

Dropbox can't sync the 'running' file but it doesn't seem to matter at all.

Foobar2000 rocks, so good having everything in sync on mutliple machines.
