It's impossible to make sense of most of the adjectives audiophiles tend to use.

Apparently, they want an amp with a wider and more 3D soundstage, but it also has to be tight and focused. It should be warm and full-sounding, but not muddy or bloated. Bright and clear, but not clinical or sterile. And it goes on and on, my best guess is that they don't even know what they actually want.

And how do you explain the differences between R2R and Delta Sigma DACs?

How do I check if something has a large swing in output impedance?

Many published tests include impedance curves which highlight that information.

It's not so much the size of the swings but the depth of the swings that matters most.

@Arnold,

Do you believe an amp with euphonic distortion, like a tube amp or something, can it made the soundstage larger/more 3D?

Is it possible to increase/decrease the size of the soundstage with an amp or dac?

If not, from where did they come into the picture?

Also, why do you feel people prefer R2R DACs?

What differences are you referring to? Cost, distortion, noise, frequency response? Each has its strengths and weaknesses.

And how do you explain the differences between R2R and Delta Sigma DACs?

The former outputs square waves (zero order hold) at the input rate which means potentially audible high frequency roll-off and requires a more complex analog low pass filter to suppress imaging which means lots of phase shift, again with potentially audible effects. Just a slight mismatch could change the stereo image.

That's like saying people prefer magic bracelets because some special group of people on some esoteric forum have a thread about it...

If you had two identical amps and one was in a heavier, shinier case with a bigger price tag then these people would also very likely prefer that one. Put an inferior amp in there and we'd still get the same result, or an even stronger preference...
