Title: Transfering files to the iPod without a computer?
Post by: minorkeys on 2006-11-01 14:46:23
I am looking for a way to transfer files from iPod to iPod without a computer? I have a few options but would like some advice...

Basically, this is not going to happen unless you purchased an accessory that would act as the PC.  I can't find the link to it right now, but this accessory would allow iPod to iPod transfers without a PC.  Still, not very practical, cheap, and it would still be easier to fire up the old PC to do this.

I have been researching since your reply and found something called a Hitch. Have you heard of this? It transfers songs, files, and photos from iPod to iPod and is relatively the same size as an iPod and works with any USB device.  Is it something I should check out?

I think you can use a modded xbox to rip CDs, and then load them onto an Ipod.

I have heard of Hitch, I remember ilounge posting about it a while back.  It might be something to check out but I am not sure how good it is.  I am sure ti can transfer files just fine, but I am not sure if it will be able to read the iPod file structure correctly (or if it just scans and loads song ID tag information).  If that is the case, I am not sure if it reads the ID tag information from mp3s only, or if it is compatible with iTunes/Nero AAC files or songs purchased from the iTunes Music store.  Additionally, if the device did copy songs from one iPod to another, would the destination iPod be able to read the songs?  If the device supported the iPod file structure then yes.  If it didn't then there wouldn't really be any point to this device.  However, it might be worth trying out.  If the product doesn't work, then you could always return it for a refund.

As far as a modded Xbox, this would only work if the songs on the Xbox's hard drive were in the mp3 (or AAC) format which would have to be done through some type of Xbox linux or home brew program as the Xbox rips all of its CDs to the WMA8 format.  This also wouldn't really be any different than hauling around a notebook (especially since a 15" widescreen notebook can be picked up for $300 with a old AMD processor that would provide better results than a modded Xbox).

Which is why you use those formats.

The stock Xbox software can't even mount an Ipod, so of course you'll be using other software.

as the Xbox rips all of its CDs to the WMA8 format.

XBMC rips to LAME APS by default.
