Post by: rdm21740 on 2005-12-24 21:22:49
im trying to figure out how to convert mp4/m4a audio files to mp3 audio files.  i am using foobar2000 with winxp pro. i read that i need to use the lame.exe with foobar.  i have went to lames website and the only files i could find are lame files for use with linux and a  winlame program buit it wont work with foobar and it wont convert m4a to mp3.  im deployed in iraq so i have limited time to do research on this subject. casn someone please help me with finding the lame.exe program to use with foobar.  or tell me of another freeware or shareware program that will convert m4a audio to mp3 audio.  thanxs

http://www.rarewares.org/mp3.html (http://www.rarewares.org/mp3.html)

The latest "stable" version is 3.96.1.
The hydrogenaudio recommended version is 3.97 beta 2.

foobar's converter should work fine. Select and right-click the files you want and choose Convert --> Run conversion. You will need to set up the converter to use the LAME encoder. I think all that you need is included with the foobar special installer. Not so sure about the standard install. I'm also not sure if you have to remove the audio from the mpeg-4 wrapper first, in which case you'll need the mp4 utilities plugin, also available in the special installer.

If the files are copy protected from iTunes music store, foobar won't do what you need, and I'm not sure if we're allowed to mention the app that does.

Also, transcoding from one lossy codec to another will really mess up the sound quality so don't do it unless really necessary.

There's another app that will transcode easily with a drag and drop interface called powerDB or something. I can't remember what it's called, but it's supposed to be pretty easy to use. You might want to look into it if someone else here can recall the name for me.

edit: dbpoweramp is it!
