Title: Burn a Truly Gapless CD on a Mac?
Post by: MBHockey on 2005-05-14 05:49:10
I've had a Mac for about two years now, and one thing that has always bothered me is iTunes' inability to burn a gapless cd (or rip one, as separate tracks).

I use iTunes, and while it's great for casual listening, it lacks any sort of power options and i seriously doubt that it's a popular player in a community like this.

So I ask, is it possible to rip a gapless CD of mp3s or aac files?  I know it has a lot to do with the additional silence that is added to the front and end of mp3s (and aacs?), but iTunes can't even do it if i just take the original .wav files off a CD and set the gap to 0 seconds, and burn it.

Any Mac users successful at this?

Not that I have burned that many CDs on the mac myself, and certainly not any music CDs without gaps. But I prefer to use Toast for that part. You have a bit more options to play with in that program. Have you tried it?

I use Macs as well, but AFAIK there is no IMO good player for OS X. I myself can't stand iTunes, but have been unable to find any real alternative, so I just have to bite the bullet.
It's hard when going from great (Foobark2k: light, powerful, configurable) to subpar (iTunes: Bloated, slow, nonconfigurable).

You can install XMMS if you have Fink, but this requires that you start X11 and this means just as much bloat as if you just run iTunes.
qtplay: is very light, but it is also very bare , 12kb but it's commandline and really simple.
mppdec: to decode mpc tracks only
xist: Looked like a up'n'comming potential great player, but author doesn't appear to have time to develop it
Audion3: It's free, but the layout and /faces/skins availble is clumsy and from the 20 or so skins i tried all are ugly/impractical as h3ll. It doesn't play .m4a/p, but just hangs for a few seconds and then stalls.

any other ?

Regarding burning, heh, forgot what you asked about .
I haven't tried what you want, but my best bet would be FirestarterFX (front end for cdrdao, included when you download Firestarter)

Toast burns gapless, but it costs money. You could also try X-CD-Roast which supports DAO burning and is free (at the expense of a horrid UI).

Use MissingMediaBurner (http://homepage.mac.com/rnc/) or X-CD-Roast (http://www.xcdroast.org/xcdr098/xcdrosX.html)

Toast Titanium (http://www.roxio.com/en/products/toast/index.jhtml) is the standard for Mac CD burning.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I have Toast, but i don't know how to create a gapless CD in it.

If i add a bunch of tracks, and set the gap to zero, it still sounds like iTunes' version of a gapless CD.

I'll give the other's a try.

Which version of Toast do you have ? Older ones would introduce microgaps when burning audio from WAV files but would be fine if fed AIFFs. I can't remember when this bug was ironed out but if you have this problem I recommend using MissingMediaBurner (if your burning drive supports it).

I just burned a disc from WAV files with Toast 6.1 and there were no gaps. I extracted the audio from the burned disc as a single file and checked it in an audio editor to be certain and it was indeed gapless. I can understand the problem with burning from MP3 etc but it should not be there with original lossless files.
