With a USB drive plugged into a computer you can play almost anything!
I have a USB CD/DVD/Blu-Ray drive that I can plug into my laptop. DVDs & Blu-Rays require "special software". VLC is free and it works with most DVDs. I also have CyberLink Power DVD which is more reliable and it plays Blu-Ray.
I can plug a thumb drive or USB solid state drive into my Android phone or tablet and play almost any audio format, and most video formats except DVDs & Blu-Rays.

CDs and other "shiny discs" getting outdated. ;) Bluetooth is pretty standard on car stereos and you can get boom boxes with Bluetooth.
There is a VERY specific standard for audio CD called
Red Book (https://www.travsonic.com/red-book-cd-format/). Audio CDs don't have regular "computer files". That's why you need special ripping software to copy them and make computer files.
Some MP3 players can play MP3 and there are car CD players that can play M4A or WMA files, etc., but a regular CD player is only required to support regular red book audio CDs.
DVDs & Blu-Rays do have computer-formatted files but again they are very specific format standards. And they are encrypted so you can't copy the files to your computer without black market software to crack the copy protection.

My cheap little DVD/Blu-Ray player has a USB port on the front and it can play MP4 audio/video files and MP3 files. I haven't tried audio-only MP4/M4A/AAC but I'd bet on it working.

It seems far away, the old cd players used to have a logo on the front for codec compatibility. like compact disc digital video. for now it is not listed on it
