Title: Low maximum volume in foobar2000, pfreamp setting not behaving as expected?
Post by: katieinthecoconut on 2022-02-23 05:52:21
Hello, so I'd like foobar2000's overall volume output to be louder, but at maximum volume it's a little quiet compared to, say, streaming apps like Spotify or Qobuz, or other things I use, like VirtualDJ.

I use ReplayGain on all of my files, and have the "apply gain and prevent clipping according to peak" setting activated. My usual "with RG info" is 0.0dB.

I've tried increasing the "with RG info" dB in order to increase the final volume of foobar2000, but for some reason all it does is make the modern songs louder, like for example something like a current song, whereas older music doesn't get touched much or at all, so all it does is make the disparity in volume noticeable, whereas if I leave it at 0.0dB at least the volumes remain reasonably even.

Is there any way to increase the foobar2000 volume? If other apps are louder then I don't know what setting is making it play at a lower volume. I've checked things like volume mixer and for DSPs, I'm not sure what else it could be. My speakers (DAC) uses 24-bit/96000, if it makes a difference. And yes, of course I can increase the volume on my hardware amplifier, but that doesn't help between apps when the others are suddenly way louder, or just generally having things be at the right level on the amplifier between different hardware, etc.

I'm not completely sure about the ins and outs of ReplayGain, but I think applying gain AND preventing clipping is not always possible, so with that setting some tracks won't be touched. Maybe try just "Apply gain" instead? I think the downside of that is sometimes it will clip quieter and more dynamic tracks to match loudness.

You mean Windows' volume mixer? It can push overall volume down and foobar2000 up.

1. Set ReplayGain to apply gain only.
2. Use the advanced limiter component in the DSP section of foobar2000 to reduce pumping introduced by the Windows mixer.
