Mac Foobar: Where are the Play/Pause/Next/Back keyboard shortcuts?

I obviously have to be missing something. For some reason the keyboard shortcuts to use space bar to play/pause, and the left/right arrow keys to go Next/Back seem to be disabled. Where can I turn them on?

They simply don't exist. (Yes, I know, it's hard to believe, but here we are.)

How is that not a basic base function of the program? That's crazy. I can't even think of any other audio app I've ever used that didn't have it either built in or allowed to customize.

Dunno. You can create them yourself though.

Not properly. You can jerry-rig something to kinda work by making a custom Finder shortcut for Foobar, but you can't map a bunch of regular keys like Space.

That's certainly better than nothing. As I understand, shortcuts are a work in progress, but Mac version has been around for like 5 years now and shortcuts are still nowhere to be seen...

Could you not try running the Windows version of FB2K in the Mac's version of WINE?
It's your privilege to disagree, but that doesn't make you right and me wrong.

I mean, why have a Mac version if the answer to basic functionality like this is to run the Windows version? Like that's a problem, and most regular people dont have the knowledge how to do that.

Maybe because the Windows version of FB2K is more mature and receives the bulk of the developer's attention/time/knowledge/enthusiasm, and if you don't do that you probably won't get the facilities you want any time soon.  Meanwhile, you could offer your services to help develop the Mac version.

My point is you have a situation you don't like, so you can either cry about it but do nothing, or make the best of it.  Or just walk away – you have paid nothing, there are no implied obligations.

I'm not saying WINE will definitely solve your problem, but refusing to try it is silly.  "Cutting off your nose to spite your face" as the expression goes (there might be a more appropriate one but I can't think of it at this instant).  Linux users have no version of FB2K at all, and have to use WINE (successfully).  Better that than a half-cooked Linux roll-out lacking all the installable components available in Windows.

IMO the meaning of having a native port is to reach feature parity and as far as I understood Peter that's the goal for the mac port, too. Actually, as it is now, the codebase of the core is identical on mac and windows. The main difference is that the mac ui doesn't expose all features that are already present in the core. Additionally, there are some platform specific issues that are not yet resolved, like keyboard shortcuts and some other things. Existing media keys on mac keyboards (didn't test others) work fine even globally like with any other mac native player. You can circumvent the non-existing ui for other keyboard shortcuts by using the system preferences for the keyboard and define foobar2000 shortcuts there. This also works fine for me, though these shortcuts can't be made to work globally. For defining customized global shortcuts, there might be some 3rd party software that can help, not sure.

I thought that might be the case, but not being a Mac user I wasn't prepared to comment.  This sounds like the solution.

Nonetheless my philosophical points stand.  And just because FB2K itself is mostly functional on Mac, doesn't port across all the third-party add-ons.
