@CyPha I don't really know about most of those ideas. I use foobar2000 differently, so maybe someone else can answer.

As for that last idea, that'd be pretty amazing if foobar could do some advanced control of audio with stems. I don't believe I've ever encountered audio with split stems like that before though, so I don't know how useful it would be without access to such. I absolutely find myself wanting to listen to just the vocals or just the instrumentals a lot of the time!

Have a play with VirtualDJ.  But I don't see any reason for FB2K to move into the VDJ space.
It's your privilege to disagree, but that doesn't make you right and me wrong.

Recommendation to integrate https://audiophile.fm/ (Hi-Fi radio only) listing service into the Radio Search tool.

This because the current radio-browser dBase is missing many of these HI-FI only stations.

Is there a command line switch for starting a user specified portable_config from the said directory ie:
Code: [Select]
foobar2000.exe --user-dir:f:\foobar4podcasts
?
If there isn't then it's my small wish! :)

Send selected Internet-Radio-stations to a playlist

Did I overlook the possibility  to send selected Internet-Radio-stations to a playlist?
This  would be nice, since it would be easy to select internet-radio stations from remote (by monkey-mote f. e.)

Support for JPEG XL (.jxl) album art

My hope is for foobar2000 to offer support for the JPEG XL (.jxl) format. It's easily the best quality and most efficient lossless image format we have right now. It's also gaining widespread system support: Apple since macOS 14, iPadOS 17 and iOS 17, and even using it as a container for their ProRAW format; Microsoft since Windows 11 24H2 (with the free JPEG XL Image Extension installed from the Microsoft Store); and even Linux (starting with Ubuntu 18.04).

To demonstrate, I uploaded a 3000x3000 album art of Beyoncé's Renaissance. Here's the size comparison between formats in maximum settings:

PNG (original file): 8.61 MB
AVIF (Lossless, 4:4:4 subsampling, Speed: 5): 8.37 MB
WebP (Lossless, Compression: 0, Filter: 0, Filter Sharpness: 0, Slow RGB-YUV): 6.65 MB
JXL (Lossless, Compression: 0): 5.21 MB

Now, let's get them to a more reasonable 1080x1080 size. I'm still going to use max settings for this comparison's sake but know that most content providers and most users will likely use less extensive/more compressed settings, so file sizes are going to be even smaller.

PNG (compression level: 6, Lanczos resample): 1.48 MB
AVIF (Lanczos resample): 1.22 MB
WebP (Lanczos resample): 1.21 MB
JXL (Lanczos resample): 1.01 MB

You can find image comparisons here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1zDpbAui0MyPBaeNrIB03mlVZiHLuYvDb

When you have to embed them to a file and said file has to be decoded in real-time, it makes a lot of difference, i.e. no lags. I think JPEG XL is the future. It just needs support. And it's happening now. I'm hoping foobar2000 would offer support too. It's a royalty-free, open standard too!

JXL is already supported since fb2k 2.0 but there were bugs in the 2.1.x series that prevented external images from working properly (embedded was unaffected). That has now been fixed and should be fine in the latest 2.24.3 release.

edit: for external images to work, I think you need to specify .jxl in the album art preferences. Using wildcards won't work.

Hi!

First big thanks to developers of fb2k!
I've registered here just to suggest one feature, so please sorry if it's already been suggested.

Since I've created a lot of playlists, after some time it becomes quite messy to find the one you want.
There is "View->Playlist manager" that could help a lot of in this regard, but it seems to lack some functions that would help a lot.
For instance, playlists are sorted in two columns, "Playlist name" and "Items", but those columns are not sortable.
I'm not able to click on the "Playlist name" and sort them by name. So, that would be the first functionality I would suggest.

The  other one functionality that would be great addition to "playlist manager" would be to create a folders in which one could drag and drop playlists.
For instance, one could create folder "rock", "jazz", "classical" or whatever, and then drag and drop playlists in those folders.
That would be really nice! :-)

Thanks!

The subject of being able to sort playlists came up a few months ago and I made a component to do it...

Of course you can wait and see if your suggestion makes it in to a future update but this is for those who are too impatient to wait.  :P

My wishlist is to support major streaming services and cloud storage providers.

This way I have a single app to play music from diverse sources. My pain is that each source has different music, different formats.
Foobar could use exposed APIs by major streaming services to play music streamed from these services, also to sync and manage playlists, use AI to do recommendations. Then foobar software could be monetized by taking a share of the profits wheen bringing new clients to these streaming services. Also foobar could be installed by default on hires players and other devices (cars etc) and take a share of devices sold profits. There is a lot of duplicate work on apps to play music and foobar being the best and most configurable open source app would remove most of wasted work on weak alternatives.

Let's say I have a playlist with mostly lossless tracks, but also some lossy. Now I select all and start converter. E.g. to dump all into a BestOf folder for my car. fb2k will now bring up the transcoding warning depending on settings.

I am asking for more options, especially c). Those could be asked dynamically in the transcoding warning. At least it would be great if those were available as advanced options:

a) Cancel.
b) Convert everything (i.e. also transcode)
c) Convert, but copy lossy to target and rename according to the converters settings.
d) Convert lossless only

I admit I have suggested c before, but the idea sounds so great and needed and natural, Peter must have overlooked it :-D

Now that the next version of foobar will have native media server feature, would love to see an official foobar container which we can run on our homeserver (TrueNAS in my case).
