the old mppenc 1.79c flexes very low sometimes (for example: portishead - sour times 96kb/s avg. or tricky - hell is round the corner 88kb/s avg.). the bitrate stays much higher using mppenc 0.90s (sour times 144kb/s avg. ). i wonder why there is this huge differenc, as bouth encoders use the same psychoacoustics.

You are mistaken with Sour Times (from the album Dummy). I checked using 1.7.9c and 0.90s both with standard profile. The MPC files both have an avg. bitrate of 144.

if the file is a mono file, the bitrate will be a lot less...

perhaps somehow the other test file got made into mono?

your right, i was mistaken. i checked it and bouth files result in an avg. bitrage of 144. just wondered, why the file i encoded some time ago was so much lower.

don't think the file got into mono as i usually ripped it and did not use any commline switches.

its not the bitrate that really matters though... as long as it sounds good...

My guess is that the Tricky song is mono. I have some jazz CD's from the fifties/sixties and they are also mono. Encoded with MPC standard they also have a bitrate of 85-90.

Nope, I have an older copy of Portishead done with Buschel's encoder, back before they implemented the standard and xtreme data saved into tags, and mine displays as 98Kbps average.  I have, um... "lost" the CD and can't re-encode to see what I'd get now.  The file is most certainly stereo.  My guess would be vastly changed defaults since the file was encoded, though I do everything at xtreme these days just for fun.
