Xiph.Org libVorbis I 20030308?

This has probably been mentioned before so I apologise in advance.

But I downloaded the vorbis dlls from rarewares just then (the ICL 7 compile) to put in my brand new and shiny cdex 1.50 and encoded one of my cds.  When I looked at the vendor of my ogg vorbis files, they are:

Xiph.Org libVorbis I 20030308

rather than the usual

Xiph.Org libVorbis I 20020717

So am I using a cool new snazzy updated and better sounding vorbis encoder?  Or is it the same Vorbis 1.0?

You are using updated libraries. The use of these was recommended by Monty at Xiph.Org, so I used them!!  However, I doubt you will notice any real quality difference, but if you're willing to wait a short while, Garf's tuned libs for -q5, and above, should be available for use.

Well, Garf has already indicated that he will release his current source, so as soon as that happens........

well, will it be gt3 final or beta 2 ?

Benjamin: It will be GT3 beta 1. Garf's a bit busy at the moment as far as I know, so he can't get much work done yet.

From reading the gt3 beta 2 thread it seemed to me that beta 2 gave higher quality outputs at the same bitrate but using the quality settings gave much larger than usual (i.e. with the xiph versions) bitrates. I'll have another read. If this IS the case, then I wonder if Garf would be willing to release the gt3 beta 2 sources as well?

Thanks

I already released GT3b2 sources, but IMHO it's not better than beta1.

Where is encoder? Where is that source?

Oh.  It got me excited at first  But I'm looking forward to seeing GT3 dlls.

Just a question that a bit off the point:  If I remember, GT3 leads to higher bitrates for the same quality settings than Vorbis 1.0.  So does that mean that if I rescale my quality settings down to achieve a similar nominal bitrate as Vorbis 1.0, will GT3 still sound better at the same bitrate?

I asked a similar question of Garf and he said that it should sound better.  But of course it's worth testing - Garf is merely superhuman, not infallible!

Cheers, Paul

Neat

I downloaded and compiled Garf's libvorbis for Mac OS X. Do I send the binaries to RareWares now or wait until the source for beta 1 is released?

Any chances for GT3b1 sources?

The source for GT3b1 is not available, but I will make it available, since I have no time to work on it right now.

Garf will be releasing them sometime soon.

We have to wait for Garf to release them.

I mean the one's which Monty recommended.  The ones on vorbis.com are still the old ones.

If you want the binaries, they're the ones at RareWares that are marked 'Post 1.0'. If you want the libraries, download them from the CVS, or you can get a nightly snapshot if you don't want to use the CVS software. Get them via vorbis.com.

strange... when i add tags to ogg files the Xiph.Org libVorbis I info changes from 20030308 to 20011231.

btw, what's this serial thing? i'm using "-s 1" for my encodes because i don't like this long number, but i don't know why  this future of ogg is unnecessary, isn't it? Ô_o

What are you using to tag those files? There was (is?) a bug in the WinAMP plugin that does that.

You don't want to do that. Each Ogg on your computer should have a unique serial number.

If you try chaining (concatenating) the ogg files that all have the same serial number, you'll see the importance of it!!

Yeah, i used WinAmp because "-c" didn't work or I was just too stupid to use the command properly
