Recommendation for iPad UPnP app?

I am looking for recommendations for decent iPad UPnP apps that work with the UPnP plugin. I am setting up a fb2k installation for a friend who wants to control things via UPnP from his iPad.

What are you using and how well is it working?

Not UPnP, but a really good way to control foobar2000 using an iPad: foo_touchremote.
Can't wait for a HD-AAC encoder :P

Need a little more information before a recommendation can be made.  The main thing being, where does he or she want playback.  If it not to a UPNP renderer, and just locally on the machine that foobar is installed on, then the touchremote plugin and the remote app will be the best choice.  If it is to a UPNP renderer(s), then for just music, Plugplayer is the best option by far.

Yes, playback will be to a remote or multiple remote UPnP renderers. The iPad will be the controller for the entire home music system. Thanks, I'll take a look at Plugplayer.

I'm not so much into the UPNP functionality, but does this mean that you have music on your iPad that you want to stream to a playback device (e.g. a wireless speaker) or is the music located on the device playing, so the iPad is simply a controller?

The general idea is to be able to use the iPad as a controller for one or more renderers around the house but it could also be a renderer itself if desired.

These are all the recommendations for UPnP/DLNA apps on the iPad? I would have thought there would be many to choose from given the popularity of the platform.

There are a ton of UPNP DLNA controllers on the app store.  Just do a search for UPNP or DLNA and you'll probably find at least 20.  But most of them are half baked or just crap.  And others are good but geared much more toward video in terms of navigating the app.  As far as music control is concerned, PlugPlayer is the only real option.  PlugPlayer is one of the few that can also act as a renderer itself.

Some of the other UPNP DLNA controllers are free, so you can give them a spin before buying PlugPlayer

Yes, this is just as I figured which is why I wanted to ask this particular group of fb2k users for recommendations instead of just taking random apps out from the store for a spin. Interestingly, at the app store PlugPlayer was only rated 2 stars so I would probably not be inclined to pay $5 for it without a recommendation from here.

I suspect a lot of the poor ratings for all of the UPNP apps across the board is people who just couldn't get it to work within their home networks.  UPNP should be easy to setup, but I've found in actuality that isn't the case, and people get frustrated with their purchase and give bad ratings.  PlugPlayer is a fine app.  One of my best purchases from the app store hands down.

That's why I asked more specific. I had high hopes for UPNP, but never managed to make it work smoothly. However, Plugplayer was the one I had most success with (AFAIR).

I don't own an Airport Express myself, but I've seen it work quite well, so if music is stored on the iPad, it's a great way to stream music to an Air-device using foo_airplay.

If music is located on a PC with foobar2000, I've had great experience with the foo_touchremote component that also uses the native Apple Remote app.

Everything is quite smooth with both above solutions. As for getting music on the iPad using foobar2000, there is no solution if it has been upgraded to iOS 5. iOS 4 works great though with the foo_dop component.

I've used both and there are pluses and minuses to each. Generally I've found that the problems with UPnP were due to "marginal" (to be charitable) implementations which was why I made the original post. The problem with DAAP was that it was Apple proprietary and subject to change at the whims of Apple. Just ask Roku who was an official licensee of the protocol originally and yet Apple still changed the protocol with no notification.

Yes, all music is located on a PC running fb2k on the network. But the DACP solution is interesting because I would expect the Remote app being distributed by Apple would be well integrated into the iPad. I think we'll give the foo_touchremote plugin and the Remote app a try and see how it works out. Thanks for the suggestion.

I just wanted to follow up on this to say that I took the advice here and went with foo_touchremote and the Apple Remote app on the iPad. This solution is awesome and a marvelous interface to foobar. The Remote app on the iPad is very slick and professional as it is done by Apple and the foo_touchremote so far is working great also.

About the only things missing for me on the Remote app is the ability to display the track metadata which would be handy at times. Other than that, things are pretty marvelous.

Thanks to those that recommended this as a solution!
