Good stereo speakers ?

Hello,

I'm currently using Sony SS-RX99 speakers (8 ohms), though the system with which I got them is dead since a long time. They are something like 15 years old.
But I have always prefered them over speakers I got later with other systems, cheap LG, cheap Philips, expensive Denon.

I don't know much technically about speaker, but I know I've always likes thoses ones because they have a clear balancer sound.

The only problem is that I think they are huge  ... (approx. 23 cm large, 30 cm depth, 40 cm height)

Well, I would like to know if there are smaller speakers with equivalent or best quality (+ clear and balanced sound, for stereo use, not to be user in 5.1) that you could suggest.

Thank you

What's your price range?  Its really hard to recommend a speaker... and I won't try.    It's best if you can go to a store and listen. You really can't tell that much from published specifcations.  Sometimes you can get an idea from the overall design/construction (2-way, 3-way, size of woofer, etc.).  But, there's no just substitute for listening for yourself.

Big things make bass (low frequencies), and little things make treble (high frequencies).    A bigger speaker/woofer doesn't always have better bass...  There's more to speaker design than that...  But, as a general rule it's easier to get bass from a bigger speaker.

The "current trend" is smaller main speakers with a separate (larger) subwoofer.  In a 5.1 channel home theater system,  the subwoofer is normally connected to a dedicated output.  But, some 2.1 speaker systems can be connected to the regular stereo speaker outputs on a regular stereo receiver.  Usually, the subwoofer is "active" or "powered" (has its own amplifier built-in).

Almost all "home speakers" are 8 ohms, and most receivers can drive 4 or 8 ohm speakers.  (Impedance is usually not an issue.)

Actually, I don't think they are 'bassy', I think  they're just balancer.
I remember I got the with a HiFi system an 3 other speakers (a kind of subwoofer and 2 small 'high freq.' speakers), but I've never really used the subwoofer et I don't use the 2 small ones since years. Also they are from before the notions of 2.1, 5.1 etc existed.

What I'm really looking for is simply '2.0' speakers.

Mybuget: I expect something between 200 and 500 EURO, but I could go somewhat higher if I'm sure I get really good stuff.
