Looking for modifiable music library database

Hello,
I am searching for an audio program where I can enter any information I want into the music library and be able to generate a playlist from that information.

Just about every audio software I've come across stores artist, song, and album information in the music library and that's about it. I want to go way beyond this. I want to be able to add extra columns in the library's database to store, say, beats per minute, played instruments, country of origin, mood, songwriter's pets, whatever the heck I want. Then, I want to be able to generate a playlist, either based on specific criteria, a range, or randomly, using the additional library information.

Is there audio software out there that can do this? Or is there some type of audio player that can just play music and I can write a library application around it?

Thank you for your help.

MediaMonkey (http://www.mediamonkey.com) also allows you to add custom tags, and you can set up autoplaylists to sort by them.

As does foobar2000.

In fact I'm not sure what player currently doesn't allow custom tags to files.

I may not be able to get around this, but is there a way to do it without modifying the audio file itself?

If you talk custom tags, a player like J River let you choose to yes/no store them in the audio file.

If you don't want to use audio tags, then try Catraxx.
