"unsupported or corrupt..." problem while converting

Hello all,
I'm new to foobar and would really appreciate your help.  I know this might be a common problem but I've looked at other posts and I'd appreciate step-by-step help.
I'm using v1.1.1 with lame.exe installed

I'm trying to convert a flac file (I had this problem with an APE file as well) that has a cue file.
I drag the cue file to the foobar window.  The tracks appear in it and the tags look OK - foobar seems to identify them fine.
I do "convert" and this is what I get:

Code: [Select]
3 out of 4 tracks converted with major problems.

Source: "D:\Dvorak, Antonin - 'New World' Symphony (Solit, CSO) [London]\Dvorak, Antonin - 'New World' Symphony (Solit, CSO) [London].cue" / index: 2

Conversion failed: Unsupported format or corrupted file

Unable to open source file: Unsupported format or corrupted file
Conversion failed: Unsupported format or corrupted file

the flac and cue files are in the same folder and are named the same:
Dvorak, Antonin - 'New World' Symphony (Solit, CSO) [London].cue
Dvorak, Antonin - 'New World' Symphony (Solit, CSO) [London].flac

the flac file plays fine in bsplayer (it plays the entire symphony)

Here's the content of the cue file:

errors, my first guess would be that the CUE file is somehow not formatted properly, but the FILE entry seems to be correct.

What file are you opening in foobar before you do the conversion: The CUE or the FLAC? (never mind, you stated this already)

How do I check if the CUE file is incorrectly formatted, and how do I fix it if it is?
The person who ripped the CD seemed to have done a good job (files properly named, log file included, even scans)...

Is there any software that checks CUE files?  Is it possible to create a CUE file by myself with notepad or something?

First, essential background reading:
http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Cue_sheet

And yes, you can create/edit cue sheets with any text editor such as notepad (cue files are essentially structured text files).

From my experience roughly 90% of problems are associated with the FILE line (e.g. incorrect file name).  There are some other quirky aspects of cue sheets (character restrictions, for example not be able to use double quotes ["] in any fields) that can cause problems from time to time.

Notwithstanding the fact that the CD is still in print and available at a good price (or even cheaper secondhand), the error message suggests that the FLAC file, not the cue sheet, may indeed just be corrupt. You can check by just loading the .flac in the playlist instead of the .cue, and doing a convert to WAV. See if that gives you the same kind of error.

Answers to your other questions:

As far as I know, there's no software designed just for cue sheet validation. Any software that uses a cue sheet will report on problems in the sheet, but only to the extent that it needs to. For example, cue sheets are intended to augment audio/data files with the rest of the info needed to burn a CD (like gaps/indexes, flags, ISRCs, UPC/EAN, CD-TEXT), but foobar2000 is just an audio player and only uses cue sheets for treating single files like separate tracks for playlist display, playing and converting...so fb2k is not going to report on every possible problem, just the ones that affect its ability to use the cue sheet in that manner. If you drag/drop the .cue file into Exact Audio Copy, you'll find out if there's anything in it that would prevent EAC from using it to burn CDs...probably the fact that it refers to a .flac instead of a .wav would be reported, but everything else looks fine. If you load the cue sheet in another burner, maybe it will tell you something different.

Yes, you can edit a cue sheet in Notepad. It's just a text file. But I don't think there's a problem with yours.

The file name is:
Dvorak, Antonin - 'New World' Symphony (Solit, CSO) [London].flac
The FILE line in the CUE sheet is:
FILE "Dvorak, Antonin - 'New World' Symphony (Solit, CSO) [London].flac" WAVE

so this seems to be ok, no?
Should I try to replace all double quotes with single quotes?

Zarggg suggested the cue file might be corrupted.  How can a text file be corrupted??

I suppose this is why it’s best to do one’s own ripping!

No comment on this?
You can check by just loading the .flac in the playlist instead of the .cue, and doing a convert to WAV. See if that gives you the same kind of error.
And it’s unlikely to work, but what if you rename the FLAC file to something simpler (e.g. f.flac) and edit the cue sheet accordingly?

renaming the files to d.flac + d.cue + editing the cue file did not help.
When I loaded the flac file to foobar, it showed as 1 file.  Converting it didn't work - it said "corrupted flac stream".  It this the problem?

My suggestion was not that the CUE is corrupt, but malformed (i.e., the FILE entry points to a nonexistant file), however that is clearly not the case.

I support mjb2006's thought that the FLAC itself might be corrupted. You run this risk every time you deal with second-hand files.

I understand.

Well... it's almost definitely a corrupt flac file - end of story.
Thanks for all the help!
