Can you burn mp3's NOT in alphabetical order?

I have a car stereo which can read mp3's, but only in the track order that they were burned to CD. I am trying to burn a bunch of mp3's to a data disc (NOT an audio disc) in a specific order so that they play back that way. However, all the Windows apps I've tried force data files into alphabetical order, then burn them that way.

Anyone know a solution for this??

Put a [01],[02],[03],. . . etc. in front of the filenames.

And be thankful that the MP3's are in order at all.

I used to burn MP3-CD's for an MpTrip with EasyCD 3.5... the burned order was pretty much random.

Numbering your files in the desired order is probably the best solution (and that's also what I do...), but if you would rather not, try the Visual ISO tool included with the CDRTools frontend. That will let you drag-and-drop your files in any order desired, and assemble an ISO from your customized layout.

  Hope this helps,

Hi I have been burning music cd's & mp3's to cd's for awhile.I have only been using adaptec cd burner program & you can click & drag the songs onto the layout in any random order before burning.I do not know whether all burn programs allow this.
Also I have just recently had a sony mp3  ten stacker installed in my car & this has a shuffle option on the face controls. As I have many thousands of songs ,I usually burn them in alphabetical order by song title(so as I don't hear the same artist for 20 straight songs).
Are you sure that your car mp3 player does not have a random or shuffle feature.
Hope this may help you.

As already mentioned in the above posts use the 01, 02, etc., scheme which is naming your files alphanumerically. This also applies to creating audio CD's when you want tracks to play in a specific order.

Try naming them like this;

Joe Satriani - Strange Beautiful Music - 08 - Mountain Song.mp3

So you have all the songs from one artist, sorted by album, and they'll be in the order they were supposed to be on the album because of the number.

Using numbers works best

Doesn't this excede the maximum number of characters (Joliet system) very easy?

If the mp3's are placed on a CD yes. Some CD writing programs aren't so nice and will not notify the user that the names are too long and they'll automatically rename the mp3's thus totally screwing up a CD with a playlist on it.

The most likely thing is that the Mp3 player reads the ISO 9660:1988 Filesystem in the CD-Rom without using the Joliet extension, The ISO 9660:1988 Filesystem oblies all files to be sorted by their filenames, therefore the only way you can alter the order is adding numbers (01,02,03) notice the padding if you mix one and two digits It'll be sorted like this (1,10,2..)

There is a better way.  See www.mp3br.com.
They have a program, Mp3br Imager that will let you control the order of folders and files.  No need to add prefixes to your file names.  Nice since most car players are very limited in the number of characters they can display.  I have been using it with good results for about 9 months.
It does depend on your MP3 player being able to handle extensions to the ISO standard.  Obviously if your player sorts the names this program doesn't  help.  Min is a mixed bag, is sorts folders alphabetically, plays files within folders in the order created by Mp3brImager.

Out of interest, how well does this shuffle feature work in practise?

I would imagine that when the shuffle decides to go for another disc you have to wait whilst the unit loads the mp3 disc. Does this infact happen and how long do you wait for that disc load? The shuffly feature on my Alpine is pretty useless/annoying because of that loading time.

You could use BurnQuick.

It's very small 492 kb, and does it's job better than a lot of the more expensive bloatware that's available. It has a queing feature which allows you to arrange the files to be burned in any order you like, for data & audio cd's.
