Using Foobar with Asus Xonar ST

I new here so beginning my learning curve having only recently having purchased a Xonar STsound card and again recently downloaded Foobar - being over the 'magic 60 years'! it's a steep learning curve I can tell you.

I'm using a Mesh pc with Windows XP Media Center

Anyway my question is this - I've set up Foobar on the playback to use KS Xonar output which I hope is the best quality output available (sounds it to my ears) but am I right or do I need to download the asio driver for even better results – I think the Xonar has Asio compatible drivers but I don’ have any knowledge of what this is all about so really not sure what I should be doing. I've done a bit of test vinyl lp recording from analog amp via the speaker outlets (only way to get required sound level required by the Xonar inline input) to pc using a program called Vinyl Studio which appears to work very well having a wide variety of quality recording settings.

For these test recordings I've used 192hz with 24 bit - results are outstanding with my old 40 year old lp's sounding like new - great.

I read in the sound card instructions that when recording at these settings the Xonar would not let you use any of the DSP effects on playback i.e graphic equaliser / multi speaker effects etc (only available when using 44.1hz) sure enough that's what I found - true hifi 2 channel stereo and the effects are blocked.

However today just by chance in the Foobar DSP Manager I activated the 'Stereo to 4 channels' and suddenly found that all the effects came to life including the graphic visual display.

So I wondered when this option is activated does Foobar  down sample the signal to 44.1 and therefore thats why the effects come to life or have I stumbled through a backdoor method of being able to use the Xonar effects at 192.hz?

The info at the bottom left of Foobar still shows the use of 192hz

Would appreciate your views.

Welcome aboard!

Firstly, it's 192kHz (as in kiloHertz), not 192hz.

Secondly, you're using up an enormous amount of disc space recording anything with a samplerate of 192kHz and in 24-bit. Even recording at a samplerate of 44.1kHz and a bit-depth of 16 bits will capture anything that's audible, so any more is a waste.

I'm sure that others will be along shortly to fill you in with more details.
