Speaker Wire Extension

Hello,

I have Altec Lansing VS2620 speakers. I need to extend the left channel speaker wire by 10 ft. The left speaker has a paired wire leading into it, which I would presume carries power on one wire and the left channel signal on the other wire. I have 10 ft of stereo headphones wire.

If I cut the wire running into the left speaker and solder in the headphones wire, connecting the left channel cables together and the power cables together, will the sound quality on the left channel be comparable to the right speaker?

I'd greatly appreciate any input and suggestions you might have to offer.

From what I see in the brochure and the user manual, speaker one (I can't tell which one is left and which one is right) receives power and signal from the computer. This speaker contains the amplifier, and has the tone/volume control, as well as the Aux in jack. The cable that connects speaker one to speaker two almost for sure carries amplified signal only. There should be only two wires in the cable, no separate power wires. You can cut the cable and solder any two-wire cable in between, just remember to keep the polarity unchanged. In other words, do not cross the wires, this will lead to deficient bass and completely screwed up spatial effects.

Also, make sure that you cut and solder when the system is off, and that you don't solder the two wires in the cable together at any point. Not only will you get no sound from speaker two, but the amplifier may get damaged.

The influence of cables and cable lengths (within resonable limits; 10 ft is definitely within these limits) is highly overrated in hi-fi systems, in such cheap loudpseakers there is no way you could hear any change due to lengthening of the cable. Unless you do something wrong with soldering, or my assumptions about what is in the cable are wrong. Which is highly unlikely.
