Foobar and Kernel Streaming - can't use

I have just bought a new laptop that comes with the AMD SB750 integrated chip. It's not all that good in volume range - the sound quality is acceptable, but tweaking the driver equalizer just a little already results in sound distortion. As a possible solution I tried to use the Kernel Streaming plugin with Foobar but the player won't show me the KS option under the Output Device listing, which actually pissed me off.

Does somebody have a solution for this? My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium x64. Also, if anyone knows of alternative drivers for this onboard chip which might increase sound quality, please let me know!

PS: I need to buy an offboard soundcard immediately, because I can't put up with mobile onboard solutions. Have been thinking about a Creative Audigy 2 ZS (PCMCIA), but I am not sure if there are drivers for Windows 7.

Use DirectSound or WASAPI on Foobar2000. Kernel Streaming for Foobar2000 was last updated in 2006.
Of course, DirectSound will pass through the Windows Mixer, as far as I know, but you shouldn't be having major distortion problems on a flat EQ with DirectSound.

And the general rule of thumb (well, the rule I'm taught when doing live audio), is to cut instead of boost, when doing EQ's.

Kernel Streaming was designed for XP, but still works with some audio devices on vista or win7, but  not all.

If you have one of these devices you'll need to use WASAPI instead.

I have tried WASAPI and unfortunately haven't had that "crystal clear" gain impression that I get when using the Kernel Streaming with Foobar.

Personally, I didn't know about that "rule of thumb" when doing EQ's, cut instead of boost, and this solved my case! Now I don't get distortions or anything - and I even get an acceptable level of audio quality off the weak onboard AMD SB750 chip. Thanks!
