AC3 encoder plugin?

Dear All,

Is there a plugin for foobar2000 that can encode AC3 and stream it through SPDIF?
(in realtime)
Many thanks in advance!

There are no plug-ins for encoding any more, you must set up Converter to use a command line encoder.

Here is a link to a thread discussing good AC3 encoders:

I know nothing about SPDIF, but I'm wondering whether you actually need to be encoding to AC3.
I'm on a horse.

If you need multichannel through SPDIF, you don't have many options. Some mainboards are shipped with DTS Connect and/or DD Live, which will use an encoding chip on board to encode it on the fly.

I know that you in theory could encode the AC3 stream using software, like a few video apps does, but don't expect such functionality in foobar2000... ever *.

You can however try a HDMI connection instead, as it should be able to transfer multichannel PCM.

Edit: * To get such functionality in foobar2000 you need an output component that utilizes the "aften" opensource AC3 encoder. The problem with this is that foobar2000 developers does not allow any other output components but the one that are bundled with foobar2000. If this restriction were removed and SDK released to devs, it is certainly possible.

It is also possible to implement the encoder as a DSP, as long as it's the last one in the DSP chain, and as long as the output volume is set to 0dB or 100%. (This does not apply to the preamp settings, which are applied before the DSP chain.)

Interresting... I didn't think about it that way...

Are you up for it?

Well, I wouldn't have any way of testing that it works, since I don't have any digital receiver. I could convince other people to test it, but that would kind of slow the development process, assuming I don't get it perfect on the first try.

That's a shame. However, I will gladly be available to test it with you during development, if that's any help.

Count me in as well!!! I'd love to stream 5.1 sound produced by foo_dsp_fsurround through S/PDIF.

In fact, it would be even better to make DTS encoding instead of AC3 as the bitrate could be considerably higher (~1500 instead of 640 kbps)
(I am not insatiable, just a suggestion

In theory that would be nice, but AFAIK there are no free/open source DTS encoder available, so don't count on it.
