Tagging Live Music (ID3 tags)

Hello,

I am curious how everyone tags their live music. More so live tracks that may be added onto albums as "bonus" tracks. If a song is titled "Song (Live)" I have an inclination to remove "(Live)" and put that in the comment section.

What about you guys?

Cheers
Bryan

I like to have it in round brackets as part of the song title which is the same convention I use for different mixes/versions as well.

If I were using tags to store the version info, I'd probably create a "version" tag.

If the title of the song doesn't include the "(live)" why would anyone add it to the title???

I do research on all of my rips and tag with 100% (to the best of my knowledge) correct artist names, song titles, etc. correcting any information I find on the packaging itself (it's amazing how much of this stuff is wrong), referencing Discogs, and correcting there as needed as well.

Usually the album listing will have it in brackets as part of the title, just like a different mix will have the mix name in brackets as part of the title. I agree that it is strictly speaking version info, but I I find it far more convenient to have it as part of the title.

I put the (Live) as part of the title of the song simply because I don't feel like looking at advanced tag info just to see if it is a live, remix, or original version of the song.  It is so much easier to pick out the live songs by seeing (Live) in a list of over 20,000 tracks.  I reserve the comments section for other info such as the CD ripper I used, whether or not that was in "secure" mode, and other various ripping/encoding info.  I like to keep the actual song information in the tags themselves.  It also makes seeing the live tracks easier on my various players (car CD deck, iPod, cellphone, etc.) when seeing (Live) in the track title.  Otherwise I would be mixing up studio releases, live versions, and remixes of songs.  I would absolutely hate picking out Another Brick In The Wall (Parts 1, 2, 3) by Korn only to listen to a live version with artifacts (the live version I have contains some artifacts, I think they were part of an equipment malfunction).

Here's an example of an album with a total of 14 tracks:

Artist: ___
Album: ___
Song: ____
Track Number: 7/8
Disc Number: 1/2
Year: ____
Genre: ____
Comment: ____
Composer: ____
Publisher: _____

Maybe the bonus tracks are on the second disc?

Song: ____ (Live) [Bonus Track]
Track Number: 4/6
Disc Number: 2/2

I'm not sure, but I think that the original poster was referring to the practice of trading live lossless recordings of bands that allow concert taping(mainly jambands etc...). Most of the time the raw flac or shn files are untagged...

I have a strange but surprisingly effective way of tagging live music using MP3TAG(from mp3tag.de) and foobar(with the live show tagger plugin!!!). The Process:

1. Starting with MP3tag I take the flac files(if the files were originally shns, I convert them to flacs. You cannot tag shn files) and add the fields DISCNUMBER and TRACK to the files coresponding to the file's ending which is usually standardized d*t*. For example, using a legal Grateful Dead recording from bt.etree.org I would add the following tags to the following files:

gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d1t01.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 1  and TRACK 01
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d1t02.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 1  and TRACK 02
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d1t03.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 1  and TRACK 03
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d1t04.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 1  and TRACK 04
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d1t05.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 1  and TRACK 05
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d1t06.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 1  and TRACK 06
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d1t07.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 1  and TRACK 07
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d1t08.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 1  and TRACK 08
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d1t09.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 1  and TRACK 09
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d1t10.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 1  and TRACK 10
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d1t11.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 1  and TRACK 11
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d2t01.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 2  and TRACK 01
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d2t02.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 2  and TRACK 02
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d2t03.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 2  and TRACK 03
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d2t04.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 2  and TRACK 04
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d3t01.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 3  and TRACK 01
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d3t02.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 3  and TRACK 02
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d3t03.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 3  and TRACK 03
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d3t04.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 3  and TRACK 04
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d3t05.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 3  and TRACK 05
gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d3t06.flac  would get DISKNUMBER 3  and TRACK 06

This is very easy to do in MP3TAG, just use the autonumbering tool. Also, note the two digit track numbering! This step must be performed first or the step 2 will not work!!!

2. Now load Foobar2000 and create a new playlist. Add the folder containing the newly tagged files to the playlist. Make sure the text file that taper included with the recording is in the same directory. Now "select all" and right click and select Tagging --->> Live show tagger. The plugin will load the taper's text file and hopefully put the correct fields to the correct tags. If you followed my instructions in step 1, most of the time it fills in all the fields correctly. For example, the taper's file for the file list I used in step 1 looks like this:

Notes:

tape flips crossfaded after "Brown-Eyed", "Fire On the Mountain" & "Drums"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note that the text file lists the songs with the same d*t* format that are used in the actual file names. Foobar just matches the two. So if the text file says:

d3t05 - Good Lovin'

Foobar writes Good Lovin' to the SONG tag of the file gd1980-06-12.fob.menke.motb.d3t05.flac Get it?

You may have to open the files in MP3TAG one last time to do some touch ups because Foobar can be a little messy some times...
