Terrible sound playing 192 / 256kbps mp3

Hello all

this is my first post.

Foobar play correctly 128 mbps mp3, but not 192/256kbps mp3.

I'm using foobar 2000 for many years (I love it). But reciently I must left out foobar2000 because I'm unable to play some of my music (the best one  ).
Initially I was find this problem when I changed my old P-4 3.0 Ghz computer with a new one with a Core 2 Quad. In both i'm using Windows XP.
I'm suppossed the problem was a bad configuration with the computer. I was not furter investigate this, because the computer is principally for working, but tried with bios, drivers updates etc.
But now I have install Windows 7, and there are the same problem.
This morning I've tried with my laptop (Core 2 Duo T8100) and, to my surprise, the same problem arrive.

The mp3 that sount terrible in foobar, play well in every player that I've tried, in both computers. So I think that the files are OK.
I've search for days in internet, and in hidrogenaudio forums, but there appears that nobody suffers for this problem.

I'f want, I can put in some internet server a mp3 file.

thanks

What are your DSP settings? (Preferences - Playback - DSP Manager)

What are your playback settings? (Preferences - Playback)

What are replaygain values of problem mp3 files? Are they correct?

thanks for the help.

I have the default values (this is a new installation in both computers)

In DSP Manager, I don't have put any Active DSP.

In preferences -> Playback:
Volume Control -> slide at MAX
Source mode -> Album
Processing -> "Apply gain"
Preamp with and without RG info: both at 0.0dB

lvqcl: I don't understand what means " replaygain values of problem mp3 files" in your question.

Here are the properties of a mp3 that present the problem.
Duration : 0:30.033 (1324464 samples)
Sample Rate : 44100 Hz
Channels : 2
Bitrate : 256 kbps
Codec : MP3
Codec Profile : MP3 CBR
Encoding : lossy
Tool : LAME3.90
<ENC_DELAY> : 576
<ENC_PADDING> : 2064
<MP3_ACCURATE_LENGTH> : yes
<MP3_STEREO_MODE> : stereo

Context menu -> Properties, then Properties tab. There you can find Track Gain, Track Peak, Album Gain, Album Peak values (if they are present in tags). Post them here.
And, Context menu -> ReplayGain -> Scan Per-file track gain. Also post scan results here.

OR: just change  Processing from "apply gain" to "none" and see if this will help.

I have put a sample in:

Link removed

lvpcl: In properties, there are no any of those tags.

When I make Replaygain-> scan per-file track, system say :

1 out of 1 items could not be processed.

Status: corrupted file. Peak too high 54.6725464

But as I write before, this files sound perfectly in my Ipod, in VLC media Player, In Windows Media Player etc.
And too sound ok in my previous PC with a (may be) old version os Foobar 2K ( I'm unable to say what version, because this old computer was infecter by some kind of malware)

In other words, get rid of it, fast.

You're right. Incredible. As I put in my posts, I changed my computer because my good old P4 3.0 was infected by a malware. I use (until now) McAfee Antivirus, and this does not detect anything.
In my new Windows 7, I've install AVAST, and detect it as a Dropper : WMA:Wimad [Drp]
But I'm boried because AVAST does not detect anything when I played the file and when uploaded to badongo.com

The files in my IPOD are good, because I've put in it before contamination.

If I open those mp3 files with Windows 7 Media Player, at 10 seconds try to open a web page to download a "special codec". This behaviour does not occur in Windows XP (may be because i have a updated and patched version of it).

I will investigate more and put here the results. Now I've find a spanish utility to clean this mp3 files called FS-mp3Fix . I will try with It.

sorry for the delay.

I don't have enought time to do this work.

Finally I have deleted ALL of my contaminated mp3s files. Really, as some of us are pointing before, those files in reality are .wma renamed to .mp3

Most of the programs (VLC, WMP and so ) does not use the extension to figure what kind of file/compression/codec use. Those programs open the file, analize it and apply the correct codec.

The utility that I've found convert again the corrupt files to mp3, but I believe this is done with a lack of quality (virus convert it previosly from mp3 to wmf, and now convert again wmf to mp3 ). May be util as a last resort with unable to replace media.

I have most of my music backed in zip/rar format, so I can recover from it.

Thanks a lot.
