Is it possible to fix Plextor drives?

As mentioned in another thread, I got my hands on a PX-716SA that has under 200 burning hours. (BTW, does anyone know what the letters mean behind the number in PXInfo? My drive has a "D".) The problem with it is that the burns have very high error rates if media other than TY is used. So far I tried TY, CMC, MCC, RITEK, Plasmon and Moser Baer India as CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R and DVD+R DL. Scans were made using the Plextor itself, a BenQ DW-1640 and a Samsung SH-S203D. While the Plextor and BenQ managed to actually finish the quality scans with non-TY media, the Samsung gave up soon after reaching maximums of 1,000 C1 or PI errors. So far, I also managed to destroy several CD-RWs completely with the unit - the discs are no longer recognized in any of the mentioned devices. You can imagine that I didn't use GigaRec or other features if not even burning normal discs works.

So...

1. Can the drive be defective or is this just a huge coincidence and it only has problems with the mentioned discs? The reason I am asking is that the guy I bought the drive from says that a broken device would also have problems with TY media which for some reason is perfectly fine (C1/C2 scans show maximums of 10 errors only and the average is also very low - same applies to DVDs).

2. Is there anything I can do to make the drive work well with other media? Newest firmware is already flashed (and I also reflashed it myself just to be sure).

Edit: The TY media I tried is Plextor CD-Rs and TY printable DVDs.

Not really an idea. Maybe it's a mechanical problem. Read this post some time ago 'cause my PX-716A had that problem (completely different compared to yours). Don't know if it may be the same for an SA-Version but decide yourself, please:
