Access denied on tag updates

On a lot of my music, I can't change the artist name on the tags. But I can on others. On the ones I can't, it says "access denied". Does anyone know why?

Are they read-only files?

Please provide more information like Operating System, music format of files (the ones that can be retagged and the ones not).

Could it be files are read only?

I don't believe so. They show as MP3s and play, I just can't rename them. Sorry for not being more specific though lol. My OS is Vista home premium, all the music files are MP3s, the ones I can rename and not.

Not sure how someone will be able to help, if "i don't think so" is the best you can do to answer a yes / no question.

The question regarding read-only files was not chosen at random as a wild guess. It is an important troubleshooting first step.

Why not just determine if it is so or not....if you do not know how...just ask.

In foobar2000 right-click on the item you can't play
Select "Open containing folder"
right-click on the highlighted file in explorer
select "Properties"

Under "Attributes"
Make sure "Read only" is unchecked.

There could be any number of reasons. Maybe some of the files are on a network drive? In a folder you don't have write access too? The files are marked as read-only? We need more information.

I've had this problem a few times with recent versions of Foobar too. It only applies to the artist tag. The files always turn out to show as read-only in Windows properties, & unticking that box allows Foobar to write to the artist tag again.

The fact that I only use Foobar for a tiny amount of tag edits compared to the number I do with Mp3 Tag Studio, yet never get the problem in the latter, suggests maybe recent changes to Foobar are causing it to sometimes change the Windows properties of a file, but I have no idea how to test this, or why that would only affect the artist tag. Or, actually more likely I guess, a recent change to Foobar has exposed a long-hidden bug in Windows...

Windows XP SP2 (OS not updated for years - no need, on an offline machine), current Foobar release.

Thanks. But no, they are not marked as read only. I have access to the folder as well.

Try using procmon to diagnose if foobar2000 gets permissions on access. If it doesn't then problem is with your filesystem, HIDS or whatever you have on your system. If it does - it's foobar2000 fault. This will clarify things a lot.

It sounds like you have permission issues. Allow yourself full rights to your own files and the issue goes away.
