I'm looking to upgrade my headphones

I currently have this pair of headphones: Coby CV200 Digital Stereo HP  which cost me $10 at Walmart.  The sound quality is pretty good for the price but nothing compared to what I could be listening to.

So I need your recommendation for a great pair of headphones under $50! I know some of you are thinking: "You're not going to get a great pair of headphones for under $50", but basically I'm looking for the best quality for under $50 and a general upgrade from the headphones that I am currently using.

Here's are some key things that I'm looking for:
  • Must have great stereo separation
  • A little heavier on the bass with strong, thumping lows
  • Clear and crisp highs and mids
  • A strong cord that won't break easily

All the extra stuff such as volume control and whatever is unimportant to me. No wireless, please. I've had some bad experiences with wireless headphones and also they're more costly. I would appreciate everybody's help on this. Thanks.

Still the best deal around - real heavyweghts, both bass and overall:

Just go to ebay and search on "SONY MDR-V900HD V900 PROFESSIONAL"

I have a pair and so do several friends.

KOSS Porta Pro
Sennheiser PX100

I have both of them and I would tell that Koss plays a bit stronger bass. They both sound good.

or PortaPro

Both, amazing quality for the price, especially if you like base.

I have them both too, but these days I prefer a pair of UE  Metro.fi 200 for portable use.

Another vote for the PX100.  I don't know what "thumping lows" mean really, but Senns can do bass decently.

The sound of the PX-100 is more balanced than the KSC75 or PortaPro (which are more bass heavy). I have heard of bassheads who complain that the PX-100 does not have enough bass. So which is better depends on what the OP wants.

Thanks all, I appreciate the suggestions, keep em coming.

Basically, I want something that can handle deep, low tones at moderate volume without distortion. "thumping" was probably the wrong word to choose for what I really meant.

Any decent headphone can do that. Problem lies in mids and highs, as far as I have listened and read reviews.

I've recently bought Creative EP-630 in-ears... they sound very muffled, compared to the cheapo headset-earphones that came with my PocketPC. Subjectively equalizer + cheapo earphones > EP-630s...  but I've also noticed that the frequency response of these IEMs changes dramatically depending on how deep you place them into your ear canal and that it is also affected by the shape of your ear canal itself (the angle is important, too). If you want more bass, use bigger silicone earbuds (that usually come with IEMs) and/or push them deeper in your ear canal, tho it seems to strengthen the muffling effect. And if you want clearer sound and less bass use the smaller earbuds.

Or to be on the safe side, avoid IEMs in general, since you've been ok with wearing "big" headphones in public before, that's probably the better option.
