artist and album unknown

What would cause foobar2000 to display "unknown" or "?" for artist and album when tags look ok in mp3tag?
On the tracks where this happens, artist and track # are combined on the track name line.
Any ideas?

Thanks,

First thing to do is to look at what Foobar sees in your tagging system. Load a few files....some that show correctly and some that do not.
Right Click > Properties. Take a look and you might deduce what is going on.
Let us know with a bit more detail if you still have troubles.

Keep in mind that what you see in any one column / cell of a playlist is going to be dependent upon your tags AND how the formatting for that column is set up. Right click on a column > hit the more and you will get to the preference section. Any one column can carry information from any number of tags.

Unkown and ? mean that the tag field in question is Empty - according to Foobar definition of that column field. Poke about and I bet you will see something easy to fix. Keep in mind that although there are consistencies across tagging programs, sometimes one programs tagfieldname does not equal anothers same named field.

OK, I see the difference, when pulling up an incomplete tracks' properties in fb, the metadata is completely blank, even though the info is complete in Mp3tag.
I just don't know what's making certain tracks so different.

If you can not tell from within foobar, try to pick one good and one bad track and take a look within mp3tag.

I went ahead and searched for bad tracks with "%album% MISSING" and retagged with fb where possible, and Mp3tag for the rest.
