MusicBee v0.2

MusicBee is a music manager and player I have written with a number of features described on the website. Version 0.2 beta is now available with the following changes:

- new secure CD ripper with AccurateRip.com validation, with the ability to rip tracks as individual files or as a single album file with embedded cuesheet
- improved cuesheet handling to now allow rating and playcounts for each virtual track on a cuesheet
- improved skin colour schemes
- improved file monitor to import tracks ripped by other CD ripping tools (if you prefer using your existing ripper over MusicBees' ripper)
- fixed screen repaint bug that affected a few people
- fixed a few minor GUI bugs
- fixed iPod synchronisation so that the 'Is part of a compilation' flag is set

Update 1:
- New TAK file playback and WavPack, TAK encoding
- New rip as WAV file
- Fix application startup crash - this applies to XP users that did not have the PortableDeviceApi.dll file already installed on their PC
- Fix AccurateRip.com validation now also works for CDs' with a data track
- Fix source file reference in Cuesheet generated from a rip now refers to encoded file rather than the temporary rip file
- Fix add/delete items in a playlist when in Album view
- Improve support for Network Shares that are not mapped to a drive letter - you can now refer to folders using the UNC path of the share when adding files to the library

The full install is on www.getmusicbee.com or if you have installed at least once, copy all the files from http://www.mediafire.com/?demfjj2bqmk to the MusicBee program folder.

Any constructive comments about the functionality or issues using the application are welcome.

Nice update Steve!

Good the CD ripper but i ask two things, first i think is useful to have also WAV encode, and second, for the one file per disc rip, to not have in the embedded cuesheet as filename the course and name of  the temp file but or simple ala eac "CDImage.wav" or the naming structure (without folders) set in preferences for single file rip.

Thanks and good work.

its no problem to add a WAV encode option. As for the second point, I can't believe I didnt notice it was using the temp filename! I will fix that, and take your point about not including the folder path

It doesnt support 64 for now - the main problem is the BASS sound libraries I make use of currently only support 32 bit. However there is a beta version for 64 bit and i have contacted the company to see if its OK to distribute the beta files. I will let you know

I would really like to review your software but have tried on my desktop and laptop and so far have not been able to open Musicbee.
Not sure if the problem my end or your's?
I have a screenshot of the error that is shown but there is no way of attaching that to this note.

All the best.

Looks really nice - and light!

And now my wish
As a script developer for the music program mediamonkey I think that a support for external plugins which can easy access the database would be great.

yes, i definitely intend to provide a plugin interface as i think there will always be special requirements that people have that i don't have the knowledge or time to do. And i'm glad someone who has previous experience with developing plugins and scripts might be interested.
I want to get the plugin interface right though and i suspect it might take some time to do. If you have any general advice about the features a plugin interface should provide i would appreciate it.
I expect to start looking at this after fixing any reported bugs, small suggestions for improvement and enhancing the core functionality (i plan to include TAK decoding, WavPak/TAK encoding, and enhance cuesheet handling further)

Anyone XP users who couldn't start MusicBee this should now be fixed

The full install is on www.getmusicbee.com or if you have installed at least once, copy all the files from http://www.mediafire.com/?mzjjj32ojty to the MusicBee program folder. If installing the changes only and you want to use WavPack or TAK encoding, you will need to copy the encoders yourself to the Codec subfolder. They are included in the full install

Surely it needs some time to create such an plugin interface and at the moment it's clear there are more important things to do until the program really has the most important features.
Regarding script interface I'd have a look at MediaMonkey. It provides a interface so that you can access the player (and the database) with VBScript (and JScript). This makes it very easy for users to create scripts because you don't even need a tool beside a text editor.

Just tell me when you're working on that part and need some help.

i've figured out how to get it working on x64 machines and tested on the 64-bit version of windows 7 beta - it all seems to work ok - the only issue i had was not been able to install to a different directory so just accept the default install directory.

here is the link: http://www.mediafire.com/?mny2tm1jz5z

please let me know that is works ok for you

I can confirm that the 64-bit version is working, though I did not have time to put it through the paces. It started, read the library and played the couple tracks that I tried. I did have to change the skin to the Windows-named one (can't remember exactly what you named it), as the the default skin would not function properly. It would not show the center playlist, nor the top list on the right side. Once I changed it though, everything showed up properly. Thanks for the program and for getting the 64-bit version working.

thanks for the confirmation and the problem you had sounds very much like a problem a few users have experienced and i thought had been fixed but from what you are saying only fixed for the Windows Native skin.
Although i cant reproduce the problem myself, I have identified where it is likely to have been caused and the fix is here: http://www.mediafire.com/?22ma1zmmlzj (32 bit and 64 bit) for anyone who is experiencing this problem

It seems that version 0.2.3314 has fixed the skin problem. All 3 are show perfectly. Thanks!
Also, in future versions will you be adding more tags? I use my sorting tags to create my directory structures.

there are 5 custom tags that can be set in Edit/ Preferences/ Tags. You can optionally map the custom tag to a standard tag if you want MusicBee to retrieve and save to the same tags saved by other applications eg. if you select 'Album Sort-Order', that will map to the 'TSOA' tag for mp3 files. The tag values for a file are viewed/entered in the Classification tab of the tag input screen.
The tag mappings for each tagging format are listed in http://getmusicbee.com/help/tagging/
If enough people ask i will add additonal tags but i prefer not to as i think there are many tags people could want and i dont want to overwelm the tag input screens.

Updated mostly for bugs fixes but a few improvements:
- New remove dead links option in the library scanner tool
- New file monitor option to add new files to the Now Playing list
- New menu item in the Now Playing list File menu to go to the current playing track. This command can also be associated with a hotkey

- Improve silence trimming when playing tracks - silence threshold has been reduced as it was causing some songs to start at a loud part of the song
- Fix saving Preferences failing in certain circumstances
- Fix multiple artist splitter not saving when single artist split is exactly same as display name
- Fix image embedded in WMA file not being displayed
- Fix auto-tagging failing, including picture retrieval when invalid data is returned by web service
- Fix auto-tagging lyrics not being retrieved when that option is ticked
- Fix Ctrl-V, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-X edit handling in text boxes
- Fix changing the file sequence in the Now Playing list not relocating the current playing track icon
- Fix dragging new files into the Now Playing list failing in certain circumstances

The full install is on www.getmusicbee.com or if you have installed at least once, copy all the files from http://www.mediafire.com/?ut4x1ninhtv to the MusicBee program folder

What tag are you looking for for rating in APE tags? Specifically, I have rating in Wavpack files that do not show up in MusicBee.

BTW- Happy to see that I can use WinAMP plugins, I have some DirectX plugins I love.

Nice effort, congratulations.

It's looking for the 'RATING' tag, however in this version it assumes a scale of 1-100 so would be setting all ratings to 0 for 1-5 scale. But if you can confirm which player you tagged the rating with i can check they use the same tag and a 1-5 scale as i suspect

Hi Steven,

Can MusicBee do replacement characters for filenames? I ripped a CD to a flac image with the freedb album tag "Glass: Symphony No. 3". It seems that MusicBee passed the colon to the filename and the conversion failed. If I remove the colon before the rip commences, the image is created with no issues.

Tagged with J River Media Center, which does seem to use a 1-5 scale.
