iRiver H340 replacement suggestions?

After almost 4 years, my H340 died.  I went back to burning MP3 CDs for a while to play in the car, but it was so nice having a 40 GB library that is quickly accessible.  Since it died and I am too lazy to crack it open to fix it, I figured I might as well try and find a player with more capacity (at least 120 GB).

I have been doing some research, but I am having trouble finding a player that meets these requirements:

1.  Must be hard drive based.  I would like at least 120 GB of storage.  Flash players can't match the storage capacity of HDD players.
2.  No video screen!  I just need an audio player.  Those huge 3" or 4" screens are absurd for music players, not to mention the added cost and weight.
3.  I despise iPod and Zune.  I tried my sister's ipod and I was blown away by the lack of features.
4.  Speaking of which, the audio player shouldn't require any special software (itunes, zune, etc.).  I want an external USB hard drive type connection that will just plug in with a standard USB cable and be recognized by Windows XP.

I was looking at PMPs like Cowon A3 and Q5W, but the battery life was too short and the price was a bit high.  I'd pay $400 for a 250 GB player if it had more than 9 hours of audio play time!

Any suggestions?  I thought I found a match with the A3, but I was disappointed with the reviews.

160gb iPod.  If you really think it such a hassle and terrible to use, get a cassette player and a large box of tapes.

I could probably deal with the ipod (and the ipod foobar component) if the newer ones supported Rockbox.  Aren't the 160GB ipods discontinued?

160GB iPod Classics are indeed discontinued. 120 only. Can't be rockboxed, and apparently the firmware is crypto'd (lost the word for it), so it's unlikely they will be.

All that said, I've got a 160 GB Classic and like it, but I sync it with iTunes on a Mac.

Perhaps you need to specify what you need a bit more fully: Rockbox wasn't on your original list. What other features that you need were lacking on iPod and Zune?

Unless you are willing to buy a 5th generation iPod or Gigabeat X or S and replace the ZIF drive with a 120 GB one (or somehow find a 120GB 50 pin ATA for older players like your iRiver) you are stuck with a current gen iPod, Zune, or a PMP.
Therefore your requirements of size and non-iPod/non-Zune/non-PMP form a zero set.

Take a look at the Archos 5, available in 120GB and 250GB configurations.

Provides up to 22 hours of music playback and supports nearly all major audio formats (WAV, MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG, AC3).

The downside is that it is kind of big, being a general media player that plays videos instead of only MP3s.  It comes with a 4.8" LCD screen that gives 800x480 resolution.

Apart from the large screen, it has everything else you said you wanted.

Try the Cowon A3 again with an actual Firmware (1.26 or 1.27). The battery life has improved a lot and it doesn't get that hot anymore even when watching H.264 videos.

If you rule out iPods, Zunes and PMPs, then it will be hard to find something that would fit your needs. Most actual players use flash memory these days, and the few ones that still use harddisks are usually PMPs with "huge" 3" or 4" screens.

I am getting this answer also quite often lately. Who the hell are they making stuff for ? Not long ago I had a hard time to find a DAP with UMS support, a thing that actually should be easier to implement than the shitty MTP protocol...
(sorry for the OT, but i couldnt help)

If you are lucky your battery died. It's pretty easy to replace. Try this guide:

If you want to sell your iRiver after all, send me a PM.

I want to use a DAP as a mass storage device and be able to replace the battery or the hard drive myself. Those are essential features for me... Most people seem to think differently.

...or get another iRiver from eBay.

My H140 (40GB) was converted to 60GB and Rockboxed when the original drive died.  Not sure what the limit would be on adding drives larger than 60GB to the H140 or the H340.  Perhaps some Googling would answer that.

Edit:

BTW, the H140 makes an OUTSTANDING lossless 2 track digital recorder.

80GB
Rockbox's (hopefully up to date) wiki page on small hard drive models.

Mind you there are also ZIF 40 to ATA 50 adapters out there supposedly, and compact flash to ATA 50 adapters.
Either of which you should have room for inside the (thicker) H340 case.
