Vista, PlexWriter Premium USB & EAC

I have a newer notebook that came with Vista SP1, a Plextor PlexWriter Premium USB, and recently downloaded EAC 0.99pb4. I have done some research and it sounds like this combination can be problematic. I would like to install and setup properly right from the beginning, and would appreciate any one who has experience with this combination, or would be able to contribute any suggestions, before I attempt an installation.

I have a plextor premium drive that I put in an external enclosure.  I have used it conntected to my Vista laptop via USB and used EAC on it countless times with no trouble.  I didn't have to do anything special to make it work.

What sorts of trouble have you read about?

Moderation: It's ok, we can read the first post just fine without the need for you to quote it.

At http://home.wanadoo.nl/jadegraaf/ubernet.o...endedDrives.htm for the Plextor Plexwriter Premium, it states: "The normal internal E-IDE/ATAPI ones are more easy to set up with EAC than the SATA or USB ones, by the way." The statement is vague, so I can't be more specific, but I hoped to find someone who knew what this meant before I tried to set up mine since this is my first experience with EAC and the PlexWriter Premium.

That's way too vague.  Just set it up and run it and see what happens.

Nothing touches a PlexWriter Premium...more ubernonsense from the ubergarbage page.

Anyhow, when it comes to these kinds of things, trial and error is the only way to go.

I have no idea what they are talking about regarding the ease of setup of the EIDE version vs. the USB or SATA versions.  I didnt' even know there were SATA and USB versions of the Premium model.  Within EAC, there are no configuration settings that are specific to USB or SATA.

I agree with the comment about it being an excellent drive.  Mine has treated me well.

Go ahead and give it a try.  As I said, I now have mine in an external enclosure and connect it via USB and have had 0 trouble.

Ubernonsense indeed :-).

I didn't mean to imply the Premium isn't a good drive, it's just the elitism makes me want to  .

For those interested in a report showing the rate at which drives produce accurate rips using the AccurateRip database:
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....showtopic=45643

Worth noting is the performance of the PX-716A vs. the Premium:
Code: [Select]
Drive: PLEXTOR  - DVDR   PX-716A   (146 users):   51310 Accurate Submissions     42034 Inaccurate      54%
Drive: PLEXTOR  - CD-R   PREMIUM   (115 users):   40857 Accurate Submissions     38053 Inaccurate      51%
contrast this with what I've quoted from that site:

Some older CD-RW drives from Plextor are also excellent, sometimes almost as good as the Premium. The newer, low-cost drives from Plextor like the PX-230A have very poor DAE performance because they are rebadged BenQs (the DVD drives like the PX-716A aren't too good at ripping either).
...not to mention that it's really not hard to find praise for the PX-230A...

Plextor - PX230a
Out of all the drives tested this Plextor ripped the best, not much work was required by EAC or dBpoweramp.

Not to disagree with the thrust of your argument, but those numbers are small enough to be insignificant.  I (unless they are tracking drive serial number) am at least 2% of that sample myself.
I know I am not alone in ripping all brand new discs with my cheaper drives (including my 716A) and saving my Plextor Premium only for discs I have issues with, so obviously my entries with the Premium are going to be disproportionally "inaccurate".

EDIT:  I will happily admit my faith in the Premium is just that, faith, and I have not performed any sort of testing to prove its superior properties.
Creature of habit.

...and I bet those guys haven't performed any sort of meaningful testing either.

In the meantime, there is test data.  If we had double blind tests with over a hundred participants with thousands of samples we'd be falling all over ourselves attaching meaning to the general public.

That reminds me, I should re-run the accuracy charts now there is 10x more data in the database (between 2006 and now). I also have ideas to improve the routine to eliminate the submissions where a disc is not in the database.

I have the Premium, the 716A and an AOpen 1648AAP PRO.
I had quite an erroneous CD, but the AOpen performed better than both plextor drives. This was interesting because the Plextors are good at ripping but found their master in that case.

Posted it over at cdfreaks but it didn't spark much interest :-)

Don't know about the Premium, but I've never had any problems with my 716 and Vista.
