Exclusive Sneak Preview: USB Turntable Comparison Guide

It's the USB turntable comparison guide that Hydrogen Audio helped me write. Perhaps fittingly, it begins, "There are no good USB turntables."

I invite Hydrogen Audio to an exclusive* sneak preview of the only USB turntable guide that concludes, "The best USB turntable is the one you make yourself."
  • Four sortable, filterable charts compare 37 aspects of over 40 vinyl ripping turntables, including specs, construction, connections and features.
  • More than a dozen software packages that assist in vinyl ripping.
  • Hardware and advice on turning an analog turntable digital.
  • Pages of advice on what to look for in a quality turntable, including staying away from ceramic cartridges and insisting on adjustable anti-skate compensation.
  • Several exceptional analog turntables in the same price range, including the Technics SL-1200 series.
Special thanks to all the HA members who helped me get to a point where I could talk intelligently about turntable technology. I hope I made you proud.

Hi -

This is a very intersting article.  I've only skimmed it, but I look forward to reading it in detail.

It was intersting to see the ARTcessories USBPhonoPlus v2 featured in the article since I'm getting one for Christmas!  I have a good soundcard in my decktop PC, but I wanted the ability to do vinyl transfers with my laptop too.  This is where I plan on using this device.

You may want to add the Gem Sound PL-USB Phono-to-USB Interface to your article.  It is a comprable device to the USBPhonoPlus V2.  I couldn't find info on the manufacturer's site about it, but here is a link to it on MusiciansFriend:

I was actually torn between the two devices and went with the ARTcessories device only because I found some forum discussion that spoke about it favorably.  Too bad there isn't a hands-on review comparing the two devices anywhere.

Moderation: It's ok, we can read the first post just fine without the need for you to quote it.

Thanks Maggior for the compliment and the pre-amp/USB sound card tip.

I have Gem Sound's USB turntables in the guide but didn't notice the pre-amp. Their web site is a little out of date (to put it kindly)- no turntables or USB anything.

I called them up. Manuals, flyers and a catalog are on the way. I'll post the details in the guide.
