Optical Out question

I just recently got the HT Omega Claro + sound card. I have it connect to my JVC Rx205 receiver. I am not happy with the optical out sound quality. In fact, I can connect my JVC Receiver directly to my PC through the PC thru USB, bypassing the sound card, and I like the JVC's sound better. I believe that when I do it through the USB to my JVC it is also a pure digital signal. So, since their both digital signals....the JVC USB plug versus the HT Omega Claro Optical out... shouldn't the sound be the same? Does the sound signature sound different based on the soundcard regardless if it thru the Optical out?
Cowon Iaudio X5 30 gig. It rocks!

Is there any possibility that your sound card is resampling without your knowledge?

How bad is it?  Is there something specific that you can describe, or is it too subtle to describe?

Your soundcard software/driver probably has features to "enhance" the sound.  (i.e. equalizer and soundfield settings.)  You should be able to disable all of these and get "pure-unaltered digital" sound.

The USB software/drivers that came with your receiver may have similar features.  But if so, the receiver software probably controls the receiver itself (as an alternative to the front panel or remote control).
