Denon DVD-2900 : CD-R Compatability Probs

Our Denon DVD-2900 can not read CD-Rs.   

I tried two different brands. Mitsubihi Black Diamond and Mr.DVD by Strand Europe sold by Maplins. The same CD-Rs plays perfectly in a dozen or so CD and DVD players we have at home and in cars. DVD-Rs from Strand work fine.

No problem with Octron CD-RW, Memorex CD-RW and Verbatim DVD-RW (the only -RW discs we have ever used).

Can someone recommend CD-Rs they have used with DVD-2900 and happy with?

Also, is the Denon-2900 capable of playing Dual Layer DVD-Rs ?
