Audio/Video from computer to Onkyo TX-SR505E

Hi there,

I've got an Onkyo TX-SR505E receiver (with two speakers connected right now, maybe more in the future) which I plan on hooking up to a computer from which I'd play music and video, but I've got some questions first before I start building anything.

First question: the Onkyo has HDMI throughput, so one possibility would be to use an ATI HD2x00 card which has an integrated audio controller, so that both video and audio would go through just one HDMI cable. However is this audio controller any good? What's good? Anything I'll be missing?

Second question: this might make the above option impossible, but when it says on Onkyo's homepage for the HDMI throughput, "* A separate audio connection is necessary to process multichannel audio." This really means that no surround sound will be going through this? Not stereo either, just mono?

Third question: if the HD2x00 option doesn't work for audio, I obviously need a separate connection for it. First option would be a digital signal from the mobo, however, people keep saying here that they often have a fixed sample rate and it will result in quality loss. Is this really any significant quality loss though? Any thoughts? Otherwise, I've read that the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 is a pretty decent card which at least overcomes this problem? Any other benefit of having a separate sound card?

Of course, my knowledge is quite limited with this, so if there's anything I haven't thought of, please tell me. Any help is appreciated!

I Have an Onkyo TX SR303. No HDMI, however. I connect it to the PC through a Roku Sound Bridge (digital and wireless,) that by passes the sound card. My output is stereo and the receiver can process into Dolby prologic or DTS as any other stereo signal.
If you are connecting trough a sound card don't worry about "fixed sample rate resulting in quality loss" (that doesn't make any sense but if there is any it will be negligible at this level.) However a low quality sound card may cause noise when connecting through the analog output.

Thanks for the reply, however, I don't think the roku soundbridge is a necessary solution in my case since the computer still will be in the same room as the receiver so simply connecting the computer directly is perhaps a better option.

Then, since audio through an ATI HD2x00 card probably isn't possible, I'll have to connect it separately and you say that an digital connection from the motherboard is perfectly sufficient? Anyone else have any opinion regarding this?

we have ordered the sound card but hasn't arrived yet. but i had the opportunity to test it with a laptop via a sb audigy 2 zs notebook, and it had wonderful sound.

all this with analog connection

anyway, i wouldn't bother with an integrated soundcard
