Easiest way to manually tag

What's the easiest way to manually tag files in foobar. I'd like to tag in a similar way to iTunes where you start with the first file, tag it and then click a button to move onto the next file.

The easiest way is to select the files you want to tag, and then select "Properties" from the context menu.

But that isn't very efficient and it will be time-consuming. Also is there anyway to make all the tags consistent because you get tons of fields added that you dont want like CDDB ID etc.

I think that the foobar properties dialogue is faster than what you described of the iTunes one. I can use auto-tracknumber to number the files without typing at all, it's faster to set the album/artist/common across all the files. Also it supports adding multiple fields. But I'm comfortable with it's layout and structure so I'm a bit biased.

If you don't want a field you can just remove it with the delete key.

I tend to use Music Brainz to do most of my tagging for me.

The closest thing to what you describe is foo_infobox, but I don't recommend it as it's on the list of Known Problematic Components.

Columns UI will let you edit tags in the playlist.  You can [TAB] from field to field.
I'm on a horse.

Select all the files you like to tag -> go to properties window -> select all the tags you like to edit -> right click and choose edit -> you will get something like a spreadsheet: easier is not possible!

fb2k's Properties dialog is bar none the fastest way I've found to tag my files. If you find something more efficient, I suggest you share it. I've logged many hours in both Properties and Masstagger, and Properties is faster.

It's really quite insanely fast. I'm flabbergasted that someone would consider it inefficient.

Show how much we know, huh?
Apparently tagging one file at a time is more efficient.

I don't really understand your comment but of course you tag common value fields (like genre, album, ...) in the aggregated view of the properties at once and individual tags with the method described above (select these fields --> right click --> edit). I really don't know how to do it faster.

I think some people don't realize that you can use the properties dialogue to masstag multiple files.

1. Select lots of files
2. Open the "Properties"
3. In the "Metadata" tab
3. Right-click on a tag's value
4. Choose "Edit" (not Edit (In place))
5. In the "Individual Values" tab
6. Click on the first cell
7. Enter your tag
8. Press enter
9. Enter another tag
10. Press enter
11. Be happy
12. Enjoy your music

The above is for entering track titles.

For album names and artist names...

1. Select lots of files
2. Open the "Properties"
3. In the "Metadata" tab
4. Click on a value
5. Enter your tag which will be shared by all your files
6. Press enter
7. Be happy
8. Post at Hydrogenaudio about how happy you are
9. Enjoy your music

It's probably also true that some people may not know how to select multiple files without a lasso.

Methods that can be used in (practically) all of Windows:
Crtl+A
Press control and A at the same time.
Result: Selects all files in the list.

click, shift-click:
1. click on one file,
2. hold down either shift key and click on another file
Result: all files in between the two clicked files are selected, including the ones you clicked.

click, Ctrl-click:
1. click on one file,
2. hold down either Control key and click on another file
Result: Both files clicked upon are selected.
Result2: when ctrl-clicking on a file that is already selected, it is de-selected.

These 3 methods can be used in combination.

An additional method particular to the popular Single-column Playlist View:
click on an unselected file and drag your cursor acrossed other files in the playlist.
Result: all files will be selected

In the default UI, you can drag your mouse to select multiple files. (Click on start of selection, don't let go, move to end of selection.)

(In order to reorder files in the default UI you need to click, let go, and try again.)

That is not only the way in DefaultUi but also in ColumnsUi!
