Cable Modem Question

I just got a cable modem installed today. I noticed in the day time about once every 5 minutes I will loose the single and the ready lite on the modem will go from steady to blinking(in which when it is working it stays on steady). I can't surf the internet or stream music until it comes back on. But at night(like 2 in the morning) the signal is constant with no breaks. Does this mean that in the daytime there are to many people using the same bandwidth(since cable modem lines have to share)? Would I have this problem with DSL?

Check the Receive Power Level in the modem's diagnostic page (it should not be lower than –15dBmV). Mine is –16 at the moment, but the connection is stable. I don't know which modem you have, for the WebSTAR models the diagnostic page is at the address 192.168.100.1

If it's low (or the Transmit Power Level is greater than 58dBmV for QPSK) there is a problem with your instalation (splitters, badly fixed connectors etc.)

Take a look here for more info.

At around 12 noon today it happened again! I went through the whole night last night from 2 am(in which is when I woke up) onward and had no problems untill 12 noon. Would that be a sign that it's not hardware but to many people in the area useing cable modems?

Your CM is communicating with CMTS even when your PC is turned off. If there were too many people you would experience a bandwidth reduction, but not the connection break. (Although the noise level in the upstream channel would be much higher)

The temperature drift can cause the changes in signal quality, so it's all ok during the nite, but when when the sun warms up, your signal deteriorates.

File a complain to your provider and check how the things are in your neighbourhood.

Ok, you just need to find the page which displays the signal quality.

I think that you wouldn't experience this kind of problems with DSL.

Well, I have no idea if this reflects on your problem at all, but we had a problem every day with our modem in the summer, it turned out to be equipment out on the street that was overheating and shutting down during the hottest part of the day.

The cable company finally replaced it. Then our modem had to be replaced (the situation improved, but did not completely resolve), and now we only get momentary interruptions during the day. Still, of course, annoying.

Your signal quality is very good, so the problem is not at your side. But, try to monitor the power levels during one day (while you have a connection). They should not fluctuate more than 2–3dBmV. If the fluctuations are greater, that suggests cabling problems. Also, the Woodinville's case looks similar to yours...

Anyway, I think that you can't do anything about this, the cable company must trace the problem. It seems that your instalation is not the culprit.
