4 Channel sound, what can be done with it ?

Hello,

Ive currently got a 4.0 setup, with two front and two rear channels hooked up to my 7.1 capable motherboard. Can four channel sound do anything or am I pretty much formed to get a center channel and sub woofer ? My two fronts are infinitely better quality than any center I could buy. Is there a way to downmix 5.1 into a 4.0 setup?

Thanks
C

I think you probably want 2.0 duplicated to the rear.

Every reasonably capable video player can downmix 5.1 content to 4.0.

In Media Player Classic:
View --> Options --> Internal Filters --> double click on AC3/DTS --> Decode to speakers

PowerDVD and WinDVD allow 4 Channel output, too.

For a stereo source front --> rear mirroring might not always be the best solution, especially if there is surround information coded into the two channels. If you use foobar2000 you can try the ATSurround Processor plugin which can do a nice Dolby compatible upmix. Another option is the 'channel mixer' plugin.

If that all doesn't work try playing around in your sound drivers options. Good drivers let your setup your channel configuration.

Are there any Linux solutions available at all ?

I am interested in Upmixing.

Thanks
