Why is it called Foobar2000?

I just really want to know why its called Foobar2000?  I, personally, think it's a horrible name.

On one hand, I don't really care about the name. I like that it isn't trying to be wannabe fancy-schmancy with its naming. But then again... when you're trying to pimp this great player to your friends: "Hey dude, check out Foobar2000. It's excellent". It just doesn't sound right.

I haven't ever seen Peter try to "pimp this great player".

My guess is that foobar is a misspelling of FUBAR, a WW II American GI expression for "Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition."  It has crept into popular useage as foobar but I think most folks do not know what it really means.  Then, I could be completely wrong as to why the software is named that, too.

It's a programming thing. Often when you're trying to explain some code, you call example variables "foo" and "bar".

According to an old foobar2000 faq, "Just use the player. Don't let the name distract you."

the fact that it doesn't have "amp", "real", or "media" in the name should be appealing enough for anyone..

foobar? Heck, and all this time I thought it was called "furball." Guess the cute photos of Peter's cat fooled me.

i don't really like the name too but i don't care too much about it.i think it's more important to make some graphical improvements of the software (not skins). i think it should look a bit like razorlame which is very easy to use because of a simple "design"

I rather like the name, excpet for the '2000' part, just sounds so dated  Reminds me of that stupid Numbus 2000 broom from Harry Potter. Just slap the '2000' at the end of a name and WOW it becomes so streamlined and modern! Hehe

If I had my way I would just call it 'foobar'

I agree that a name change should be considered. The 2000 on the name doesn't make it sound all that good.

So how about the name FoobarAudio?

I think we can say for sure Foobar won't support video.

I've also wondered about the name, I figured the 2000 part was probably a bit of a joke.

I guess it is because it initally worked only on Windows 2000 and newer.

Hey! I made that logo. I think its great.

As for foobar2000... yeah, I think its a bit of a naff name... but its a bit kitsch really, just Peter toying with us all. He's a bit of a cynic really - its token of his style of humour. You have to just accept it, because he wont give you any other choice.

You really ought to hang out in IRC a bit more.
