Russia agrees to shut down AllOfMp3.com and other music sites

My brother is a musician so I support many of Goodnews's points, although neither of us would say we were Christians. I also think he has sometimes breached the copyright of other artists... Contradictions, eh?

I remember going to a show once where the two musicians involved (I won't name them in public but I was at the gig and have at least three witnesses to this) said they were quite happy with home taping, as they described it (I don't think many people had CD copiers then).

Their reasoning was, if someone likes the music they will come to gigs and buy records. If they don't like the music they won't play the tape anyway, so no loss. We bought a CD at the gig and so did one of our friends.

Now, of course, their view may have changed now that digital copies are freely available (after all tapes were worse than 128kbs MP3s, in my view - no need for a sound quality debate here, they would get chewed up by my in-car player very quickly so had NO quality at all). Of course, their record label would not support their view (although I bet quite a few record company staff have copies of things they should not have, even so).

These days it isn't hard to find an artist's whole back catalogues for download from the web from one link.

That sort of thing is going to have an effect on people's purchasing. Like it or not that is going to have an effect on record company investment eventually.

Of course, things like Led Zepp/Stone remasters/reissues will keep appearing because a profit is guaranteed, the loss is likely be in work by new artists. Without new artists what will we listen to in 10 or 20 years' time. Not just old recordings, I hope!

Price is part of the key for purchasers, of course. I bought a 2-CD/DVD set by Paul Weller yesterday for £10 (about $18). That's good value. I didn't buy it when it was £18. I'm sure I could have downloaded the whole thing for free somewhere... and now I've got to go back to work to earn some money to pay for my habit!

Russia has agreed to US demands to close the popular music website Allofmp3.com

I hate news like this.
The US demand, the rest of the world falls to their knees.

R-r-ight. And bargaining WTO deal is much worse than supporting their bombing compains or hosting military bases, CIA jails and the like.
So much for knees and tongues, figuratively speaking.
