M-Audio transit locks computer if unplugged :(

I have a problem with the transit, when I undock my laptop my computer totally and utterly hangs.
Same thing happens if I just unplug it. It's not a docking station issue.

And remedies? Using XP SP2, HP nc6400 notebook.

Or any good alternatives? I'd actually consider one with surround as I have invested in a projector
Best regards JOhan

I don't have that problem with my Transit either. I've used it on more than 5 separate computers (all XP) and have never experienced an issue like you describe. I would try un-installing the card and re-installing it with the latest drivers available.

So I guess it might be computer spesific :/ What could be causing it then?
Will try reinstall

If it is computer specific it's probably an issue with the USB contoller in your laptop and how the BIOS is setting it up rather than a driver issue. This more likely if the computer is just freezing solid rather than producing a BSOD.

Try, in this order

- Any driver or BIOS options to disable USB2 on the port and force it to behave as a USB1 port.
- Any BIOS updates available.
- Any newer motherboard chipset drivers if available.
- Any newer driver for the Transit itself if available.
- Clean reinstall of Windows plus newest drivers.
- A different USB audio dongle, for example an Edirol  UA1-EX, the best bet is to find a shop that will allow you to try before you buy.

If non of this works unfortunately there may be no solution other than a new laptop with a less broken USB controller in it.

Thank you for the good advice, I think you're right. Let's hope it's fixable, will fiddle with it.

I tried switching to the newest intel chipset drivers, and I do have the newest bios. I just reinstalled windows and had the same problem with my old stock hp xp install.

There has been no new drivers for the transit for a long time, there are some really old ones available though

The edirol looks good, what are my alternatives if I also want surround? 5.1?

Depends what you mean by surround.

Some USB audio dongles will allow output of a non audio stream over the SPDIF. Usually to do this you need windows XP and some compatable DVD playing software like PowerDVD. Almost all consumer marketed USB dongles can do this, if ones marketed at home studios can do it is patchy and even if they can they don't always advertise the fact. One which does is Edirol UA-4FX.

Some consumer ones actually have 6 analogue outputs and can therefore take the output from a software dolby digital decoder again in PowerDVD etc. An example would be a Terratec Aureon 5.1 USB

In any case I'd try to find different USB audio dongle to try before you spend money replacing the transit. Obviously the notebook not liking any USB audio dongle would be the worst possible outcome.

I guess SPDIF would work, no need for 6 analouge ports. I've researched bios settings and disabled usb legacy support, that was the only real possible problem. no change.

I'll try another soundcard then, only usb device I've had this sort of trouble with, except disconnecting my cell from activesync which freezes maxthon or ie... baah.
