New iPod Nano, how is audio quality?

The recording and playback levels when I tested my iRiver were set to max, but the RMAA software told me that I should increase the volume - which I couldn't do.

I've seen that message on just about all the portable devices I've tested. Just carry on regardless.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing other test results for this device. If you'd like to zip up and email me your results I can add them to this page.

Thanks.

I have a question regarding the new iPod nano.
I'm currently looking for a great quality 2GB player... and i like the iRiver U10 (or Clix) and as i know the iRiver audio quality i preety great.
How is the quality of the new iPod compared to that of the iRiver?

I recently replaced my Nano with a iRiver S10. S10 is a player with shuffle size plus a Color OELD Display.
I had a head to head comparison with both players. Playing with the same headphones and music, I can find the iRiver are better in every sound status. For navigation, I’m very comfortable with the iRiver D-Click system. Compare to Nano/Shuffle, the iRiver also come with a lot of extra features including FM radio and voice recording. In my opinion, I believe iRiver have a better mp3 player.

Same problem as with iRiver:

---------------------------
Error
---------------------------
Cannot find sync signal at the recorded waveform.
Try to adjust playback/recording levels.

OK

I appear to be the first to link to This Test of the second generation Nano under 16 and 32 ohm loads.
Creature of habit.

There needs to be a database of RMAA test results somewhere.  HA should have a forum for them, since no one else seems seriously interested in documenting this stuff outside of a handful of posters on various boards and some Chinese sites.

I'm thinking about replacing my old 2G iPod with something new, and I think it would be new 2G Nano. Anyone have one?

I heard that 1st Nano had some audio issues, audio quality was worse than a normal "big" iPod (due to a smaller/simpler components I guess). What about new Nano? Is audio quality ok compared to a normal iPod?

I have an 8 GB 2 G Nano and it sounds significantly better than my 3 G 20 GB. Cleaner mids, better stereo separation, warmer "rounder" voices, less sibilance. Retains its sound quality at lower volumes than the 3G 20 GB

This is of course subjective, but I've done extensive side by sides using the same MP3's (LAME 3.97, V0 q0), same head phones (several different models), higher/lower/same volume, many types of music. The Nano always comes out on top.

I don't know if it is better or worse than current 5.5 G or 1 G Nanos.

I also don't know why it sounds better to me - different decoding chip, higher quality amp, higher output, etc.
EAC secure | FLAC  --best -V -b 4096 | LAME 3.97 -V0 -q0 -b32

I hope i will not be spanked by bringing up an old thread, but i think the transit is the problem.  it must be set up perfectly for it to record and playback or record even properly.  i have owned it for several years and found that for these tests, it will produce much worse results than even my built in sound card on my macbook pro.

my tests from rmaa looked very similar but i did not save them with rmaa.  the ipod, d2 and sony all performed terribly when connected to my transit, but they all were exemplerary without load under rmaa and my stock soundcard.

i would love to do this again but i sold my d2.  i know it does not do well with low imp headphones though and cannot imagine the ipod to do much better.
