hard drive and dvd backup for music files...

All,

I've got my cd's on my HD in flacs.  I will be converting them to MP3 so I can use them on DAP's.  I would like to backup my music so I don't have to go thru that mess again.  I figure I would just get a USB external HD and only use it for back up, and also burn the music files(the ones in .flac) to a DVD.  I've never done either(never burned a dvd or used an external HD).  I think I can figure out transferring the music to the external HD easy enough, so my questions are:

Is it possible to burn .flac files to a DVD?

If so, do I need a certain burning program and is there a free version?

How many MB's will a DVD hold?

Would I be better off just using CD's?

I chose these back up options cuz they seem the easiest to me.  If anyone could offer some advice I would greatly appreciate it.  Thank you,

Ron

1. Yes.

2. This free one was recommended recently (http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/) but I use Nero.

3. 4.7GB I think.

4. It is more economical and more manageable to use DVDs.  I believe the error tollerence is better also.

I also backup to DVD and also to a hard drive.
I'm on a horse.

Yes, 4.38GiB, but 4.7GB.  Manufacturers use 4.7GB, or 4,700,000,000 bytes, which is actually 4.38GiB, or 4,482.27 MiB (or 4,700 MB ).

You can use Imgburn to record your dvds which, IMHO , is a lot better than Nero for data dvds. Only ~1Mb and free

If you have an available IDE or SATA connection in your PC, it's simpler and perhaps even more economical to just buy another hard drive. It's easy as pie to connect a couple cables and turn a few screws. If you're going to use DVD for backup, do it in addition to hard drive backup, not in place of.
