WMP10 v. iTunes Volume Difference

I am running WinXP and have noticed a big difference in sound volume when playing an MP3 in WMP as opposed to iTunes 7.  In WMP, the volume is _very_ loud - the volume level is set to just 10.  However, to play back the same song at the same volume in iTunes I need to ramp the volume almost all the way up.  Neither application is using any "sound check" option or equalizer settings (as far as I can see), so I wondered what else could be responsible?  I can use the iTunes equalizer pre-amp setting to increase the volume, but I've read that this can produce a lot of distortion, so I'd like to leae my EQ settings flat.

It's not a big deal, but I am curious as to why there should be such a difference between the two applications.  This is my first post, so apologies if it's in the wrong place!
