MP3 frequency and MP3 player output frequency

I bought a Samsung YP-Z5AS MP3 player a couple of days ago. According to the specifications, the Output Frequency Range is 20Hz - 20KHz.

Would there be a noticeable difference in the sound quality if I converted all my WMA's (192kbps) to VBR MP3's with the frequency set at 22KHz? I'm just trying to save a lot of space on the 4GB player while keeping the quality. All the converted files would go on a different hard drive and the originals would be kept.

So does anyone see a problem with this?

According to the specifications, the Output Frequency Range is 20Hz - 20KHz.

That doesn't mean much, and should have no bearing on your file conversion decisions.

If you mean a sample rate of 22KHz, then there will certainly be a noticeable difference.

You need (more than) twice the sampling rate of the maximal frequency you want to reproduce.

So in your case, you want the MP3's or WMA's to be at least sampled at 40kHz. So just use the standard 44.1 or 48kHz.

By that I meant an MP3 encoded with the Variable Bitrate setting.

@Jerfer: If the Samsung player you're using support Ogg Vorbis, I recommend experimenting with Ogg Vorbis low bitrates, e.g. -q 1 up to -q 4.

The MP3 player specification refers to the sound frequency, not the digital sampling frequency.

Because of the way digital representation of sound works, if you encoded everything with a sampling rate of 22KHz, you would end up with a frequency response range of 0-11kHz, which, in short, would suck.  Stick with the default sampling rate when encoding unless you have good reason not to.
